The frost soon will take the flowers from my garden. Every year there are surprises….what has bloomed and what has struggled? What has been knocked down by a fierce wind after having grown nine feet tall? I know that those flowers can be cut and made into a fall bouquet and that their seeds can be saved for next season. What I know is that I can never replicate the same garden twice. Recruiting mirrors this experience. Companies are ever-evolving. To cultivate a flourishing organization, it’s essential to nurture talent at various stages of development. I often wish I could predict every twist and turn, but I’ve come to accept that much of the beauty lies in unpredictability. When I encounter something exceptional—I find a place for it, even if it wasn’t part of the original vision. Identifying such talent is one of my strengths as a recruiter. After all, every great garden thrives on surprises. My advice to clients if you come across a rising star, try to find a solution to add them to the team. Like a stunning flower that brings unexpected joy, the right person can transform an organization, adding vibrancy and growth in ways you never imagined.

“Things always change.” is the refrain I say daily to people. The market has been tough and there are days I barely believe it myself. Then I look at the same spot in my garden. The same place and how vastly different a few months can make. I am seeing people announcing that they’ve landed at new companies. I am seeing people start new companies which is bold and exciting. Yes, there is bad news too. Talented people are getting quietly laid off. Others are reporting headwinds. My advice remains steadfast. Don’t lose hope. Things will invariably change.

Gardening is both an art and science. There is also an element of luck, of alchemy, where things can come together and be more beautiful than expected. The same holds true for recruiting. People have different talents and when you bring them together the unexpected can happen creating outcomes better than imagined. The heartbreak of gardening is those moments of synergy and magic are fleeting. Conditions change. One day can be spectacular and the next day ordinary. The same for recruiting. The same team that closed a complex deal in q4 or came up with a brilliant go-to-market may be facing headwinds in q2. As a recruiter and a gardener, I always look for the potential of what could be while trying to vet for what conditions will likely lead to success and growth. Living things are imperfect. It takes patience, cultivation, and the long view to see results. At times, the results can be absolutely breathtaking.

Life is unpredictable. There was an earthquake in NY today which fortunately was small. It was an adrenaline rush and a reminder that the rare and unexpected can happen. I often speak with people who have had an “earthquake” in their lives…unpredictable events that upend plans in their careers and lives. Employers are often looking for a linear path and may overlook talented gems who have gaps due to unforeseen events. My advice is to remember life is unpredictable. Be open to speaking to people who may have a non-linear path. People who have recovered from “earthquakes” often have grit and resilience that they’ll bring to a new role.
