This school year, 300 children in Mexico started their school year with more than just new backpacks. They began with hope, relief, and the promise of a brighter future. For parents like *Sara, a single mother of eight, these backpacks didn’t just mean school supplies—they provided a chance for her children to thrive while she pursued her own dream of becoming a nurse. Together, we can lighten the load for even more families. Education is the key to lasting peace and brighter futures. Join us in making a difference for more families like Sara’s: https://lnkd.in/efBHWgF3 #TheThingsWeCarry #LightenTheLoad

End violent conflict. It’s our purpose — our call to action.
关于我们
Search for Common Ground is the world's largest dedicated peacebuilding organization. Founded in 1982 and nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018, Search for Common Ground works to transform the way the world deals with conflict - away from adversarial approaches and towards collaborative problem solving. We work with local partners to find culturally appropriate means to strengthen societies' capacity to deal with conflicts constructively: to understand the differences and act on the commonalities. Our mission is to transform the way the world deals with conflict: away from adversarial approaches, toward cooperative solutions. We have developed a broad array of operational methods, which we call collectively our "toolbox." These include well-known conflict resolution techniques, such as mediation and facilitation, and less traditional ones, like TV productions, radio soap opera, and community organising. We have found that employing several tools at the same time increases their overall effectiveness.

We are absolutely thrilled to gather with Former President Barack Obama and others for the Obama Foundation's 2024 Democracy Summit. Search's CEO Shamil Idriss, VP of Strategy Michael Shipler, and Common Ground USA's Director of Strategy and Community Faitth Brooks will join inspirational global leaders to share our approach?to building common ground in a polarized world.
We’ve been through a lot in the last few years, and many folks may not feel like this is the best time to talk about democracy. But I think this is exactly the right time to talk about it. Over the last couple of years, we’ve talked about two of the major factors eroding democracy: the change in how we get information, and how a shifting economy makes a growing number of people feel like they don’t have control over their own economic fates. But there’s a third element to this, which is how in a country as diverse as ours we can set up rules and habits that allow us to disagree deeply while still finding a way to live together. This idea – called pluralism –?will be the focus of the Obama Foundation’s third annual Democracy Forum on December 5. I’ll share more of my thoughts then – and I hope you’ll tune in at?https://lnkd.in/e4tkWiUw.?

People in the world’s most vulnerable places cannot wait for the ‘right’ conditions to adapt to climate change. Climate action in these settings is possible and can offer avenues for conflict prevention, inclusive peacebuilding and sustainable development. At #COP29, the international community has come together behind a set of?Common Principles for Effective Climate Finance and Action for Relief, Recovery, and Peace. The principles call us to: 1. Understand people and place for enduring, impactful outcomes. 2. Be agile to maintain and boost resilience. 3. Prioritize local ownership and leadership by affected groups. 4. Support collaboration and synergies. The principles drive action to ensure that climate finance and action are agile, inclusive, and accountable, helping to build the foundation for resilient development and inclusive peacebuilding in the most vulnerable communities. Now is the time to ensure that climate finance reaches the people and places who need it most. ?? Read the principles here:?https://lnkd.in/djfw3t29 #PeaceAtCOP

In 2022, the ten most fragile and conflict-affected states (FCAS) received less than 1% of global climate adaptation financing, despite facing the worst impacts of the crisis. With the ongoing COP29 this week, we must ensure that FCAS are not overlooked. So how can we ensure climate funds reach local communities, civil society, and local actors across the world at scale? ?? Discover how local civil society organizations could play a key role in driving change:?https://lnkd.in/ehDaxypy

Today is Peace, Relief, and Recovery Day at #COP29 – a crucial moment to recognize that climate action and peace go hand in hand. That’s why we are calling for climate action to be conflict-sensitive and for peace to be a priority at the ongoing COP and all upcoming COPs. We, as part of the Peace@COP collective, have put together a policy paper providing recommendations for involving peace in climate action negotiations. Discover our recommendations for mitigating military environmental and climate impacts, fostering community engagement in climate programs, allocating loss and damage funds to vulnerable communities, and including youth in climate and peacebuilding efforts, as well as how conflict sensitivity can be integrated into climate initiatives and how we can move towards a Green Transition in?conflict-affected areas. ?? We are honored to have collaborated with MO* magazine ???? on this special edition, dedicated to building sustainable peace and the role of youth in peacebuilding! This special edition highlights the need for peacebuilding and conflict prevention, especially in light of the global conflicts currently happening in areas such as Ukraine, the Middle East, Myanmar, and Sudan. Independently created by MO*’s editors, the issue shines a light on the powerful impact of civil society, the unifying influence of art, and the often overlooked role of women and young people in peacebuilding. Please note that this an exclusive edition, intended for proMO* subscribers.
?? In Sri Lanka, a small stream became a source of division, with farmers blaming each other for water shortages. But instead of fueling conflict, our friend B. M. Jayasekara joined the Alternative Dispute Resolution Forum to uncover the real cause—a nearby pine forest—and work toward practical, unifying solutions. By fostering collaboration and understanding, this community is restoring access to water and building a more peaceful, resilient future together. #cleanwater #peacebuilding #collaboration

Sometimes well-meaning national or international NGOs, governments, or religious institutions operating in conflict-affected zones can end up causing more harm if not careful. That’s because humanitarian, developmental, or any other action intervening in a region affected by conflict, finds itself involved in that conflict. This means that each action taken whilst operating in the region, from buying from local suppliers to renting real estate, to simply just eating in restaurants and interacting with the local population, can influence the balance of power in the area. That’s because, without realizing, you might end up supporting one party in the conflict or even just be perceived as siding with them. Even without intending it, humanitarian or development intervention can increase the power of some involved in the conflict whilst reducing that of others. And so, unintentionally, and if left unchecked, humanitarian or development aid can aggravate existing frictions or create new tensions. So how do we prevent this from happening? ?? Watch our video to discover how conflict sensitivity is key to delivering assistance, all while avoiding exacerbating tensions and even helping to decrease them in some cases: https://lnkd.in/ezN3MGXz

The intensification of climate change will impact every part of our planet — however, the effects will be felt differently depending on existing coping mechanisms and the availability of support. Already fragile communities that rely on natural resources could face consequences such as competition for land and water, and escalating tensions that could lead to violent conflict. It's essential to address climate adaptation and peacebuilding needs together. However, current approaches to both challenges are still operating in silos, and this needs to change. ??
