Funding the future of our homelands

关于我们

The Seacoast Trust is a perpetual funding source for the Sustainable Southeast Partnership, which promotes the collective well-being and economic prosperity of Alaska Native tribes stewarding one of the world’s most ecologically important places — the coastal temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska. With the Seacoast Trust, we’re supporting the region’s original and current Indigenous guardians — the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples — ensuring their lands, waters and communities remain healthy and abundant for future generations.

A Major Milestone for Southeast Alaska! I'm excited to share that we’ve raised 25% of our $100 million goal for the Seacoast Trust. Now, it’s time to push for $50 million. Three years ago, the Seacoast Trust began with a $10M challenge from Sealaska, matched by $8M from The Nature Conservancy. Since then, generous support has come from partners like Home Planet Fund, Rasmuson Foundation, Edgerton Foundation, and more. Gunalchéesh (thank you) to all! Recently featured in The Nature Conservancy magazine, our work with the Alaska Youth Stewards and other local programs is helping shape the next generation of leaders in Southeast Alaska through hands-on conservation and cultural connection. Guided by Indigenous values and leadership, the Seacoast Trust is building financial sovereignty, driving systemic change, and ensuring a healthy future for both people and nature in Southeast Alaska. Together, we’re planting seeds today for a flourishing tomorrow. ‘We are tired of being resilient.’ Our community has told us this time and time again. Yes, Southeast Alaskans, and Alaska Native peoples in particular, are strong — standing today as an act of resistance to colonialism, attempted erasure, and systems that were not built to benefit Indigenous communities. It’s not easy for anyone to live in the remote, rural and rainy, or, to stand hopeful in the face of social and environmental uncertainty. The word “resilient” envisions growth in the wake of trauma. However, centering trauma, and defining Southeast Alaskans by an ability to withstand impact, does not represent the complexity and beauty of our identity. This is why the Sustainable Southeast Partnership (SSP) is changing the name of our monthly column from Resilient Peoples & Place to Woven. By choosing the name Woven, we emphasize the interconnectedness, strength and balance of our communities. We believe that our identity is more than our ability to survive, but our inherent worth, the vibrant tapestry of our shared experiences, and our continued power to thrive. As SSP Program Director Marina Anderson explains, “Alone, as warps and wefts, we are fragile. Woven together, we are strong enough to lift our communities.” Read more in our monthly column 'Woven Peoples & Place' in the Juneau Empire (https://lnkd.in/gRnjFCyb) or on our website (https://lnkd.in/g3jAFpHP).

    Chief Executive Officer at Patagonia

Hello, Earth, meet Home Planet Fund. It’s a new nonprofit that will spend every dollar it receives from donors supporting Indigenous communities that know how to prevent climate chaos. ? An initial $20 million in seed funding from Patagonia covers overhead, so all public donations go directly to those who know their land, and its resilience, best. ? For 50 years, we've done "business unusual." Now we're trying "philanthropy unusual." Home Planet Fund invests in regions, particularly remote ones, proven by science to keep Earth cool.

Home Planet Fund joins donors Sealaska, The Nature Conservancy, Rasmuson Foundation, Edgerton Foundation and others in recognizing the potential of the Seacoast Trust to drive systemic change. “For too long, the ingenuity and leadership of Indigenous communities have been sidelined in the fight against the climate crisis. By investing in the Seacoast Trust, we are affirming our commitment to centering local, place-based solutions that honor Indigenous knowledge and empower frontline stewards of the land. We are honored to support this work and look forward to a long-standing partnership.” ~ Dilafruz Khonikboyeva, Home Planet Fund Executive Director?

Relationship building with Spruce Root and the Seacoast Trust

I am thrilled to share exciting news: the global initiative Home Planet Fund is making a $1 million investment into the Seacoast Trust, bringing the total we’ve raised to $23.1 million to support the work of the Sustainable Southeast Partnership in perpetuity. Home Planet Fund is a mission-driven foundation that addresses the climate crisis by directly supporting Indigenous and local communities who have been underestimated? for too long. Home Planet Fund empowers organizations in Africa, Asia, North America, Oceania and South America — investing in nature-based solutions that for centuries have enhanced biodiversity, mitigated climate change and strengthened communities. This is one of Home Planet Fund’s first major grants underscoring their confidence in Spruce Root’s community-led conservation approach. Aligned with the Seacoast Trust’s Indigenous-centered model, this partnership promises transformative change for both people and the planet. Gunalchéesh Home Planet Fund we are honored to partner with you. More to come!
