"From 2018 to 2024, there was a 77% increase in adults aged 65 and older facing homelessness, according to new data reported by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. The numbers rose in that period from 677 to 1,199 people, a “concerning trend” according to Danielle Meister, assistant secretary of homeless solutions within the department." As the demographics of our region trend older, we need more solutions that are tailored to the needs of older adults. While #affordablehousing and #foodinsecurity are issues facing everyone, they hit people living on fixed incomes especially hard. That's why it's so important to start building affordable housing solutions NOW. Seabury is working with Enterprise Community Development over the next few years to redevelop Springvale Terrace in Silver Spring, which will increase by 60% the units available for senior affordable housing! By 2027, we will hopefully have 236 units available for low-income seniors in need of safe, stable, affordable, and supportive housing. https://lnkd.in/eWacgP5d

At Seabury we like to celebrate milestones, and we are so excited to celebrate the 105th birthday of Ms. Evelyn McKenley! Ms. Evelyn is a member of Model Cities Senior Wellness Center in Ward 5, and only stopped driving to the Center last year :) She is an integral part of our community, and we were so happy to have WJLA-TV join us for a birthday celebration this week. Happy birthday Ms. McKenley! They asked what experience stood out most to her in her long life. See the video for her answer! https://lnkd.in/eCcmcN7V

We had a great morning yesterday at Friendship Terrace with our Board of Directors and Advisory Council members at our Annual Breakfast! Hearing from our volunteer leaders about the incredible work they're doing across the organization was so powerful. Just a few examples: - 95,000 no cost meals served to older adults across Wards 5 & 6 in 2024 - 6,500 hours of care provided to seniors and their families through Care Management & Life Enrichment Services: 20% of that time was covered at no cost to clients by the Care Management Equity Fund - $16M refinancing of Friendship Terrace in 2024 not only created capital for renovations and infrastructure improvements, NOT ONLY converted 125 units to DEEPLY affordable housing based on income, BUT ALSO started a $3M Food Trust to support low-income residents cost burdened by meals - and so much more! Two standout lines from the morning: - from Frank Finnamore, a member of the Care Management Advisory Council: "I'm a fourth generation Washingtonian. As I stand here in Friendship Terrace, this morning feels full circle, because Friendship Terrace was the last place my grandfather called home." - from Ms. Brown, a Ward 5 resident and member at one of Seabury's dining sites, speaking of what the dining site coming to her building meant to her: "It took me out of that depressed state, made me feel loved, and I loved them back. It reminded me we didn't have to be thrown away if we didn't want to." Thank you to everyone who joined us, it was a great event to remind us of the incredible work that's going on to make sure everyone can age with dignity and independence!

We had a great time on Friday with our Board member for a Seabury Bus Tour! Thank you to David Shepard, Marti Brown Bailey, Sharon L. Sellers, MBA, MPH, and Michael Bochnovic for taking the morning to learn more about the mission of Seabury. 1 in 3 older adults in DC are experiencing hunger. Seniors are the largest and fastest growing demographic for homelessness. With more Baby Boomers retiring every day, this is the moment we need to recognize the enormous challenge facing our communities. We will all get older - are the resources we need to age with dignity and independence there for us? Seabury Resources for Aging is focused on Expanding Affordable Housing, Connecting People to Resources, Bridging Social Isolation, and Satisfying Senior Hunger. Keep a look out for our next bus tour to see our work in action for yourself!
