Last week Kongsberg Discovery attended the 6th?Pacific mapping meeting in Fiji.
The event included two separate group meetings: the GEBCO annual meeting and the Pacific Seabed 2030 project meeting. The two meetings gathered 90 participants from all over the world, including many Pacific hydrographic organizations, local dignitaries, and global mapping leaders.
The General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) Guiding Committee gathered for their annual meeting. The GEBCO is a organization for the global chart and have a shared ownership from IHO and IOC. The Guiding Committee joined to discuss the current state of the group, the strategy and the implementation of the strategy for the future.
Arne Hestnes is part of the Technical Subcommittee for GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans and attended on behalf of Kongsberg Discovery.
The Seabed 2030 gathered for a workshop on bathymetric tools, several presentations on the mapping efforts in the Pacific, and discussions on the strategy to increase the mapping coverage in the Pacific regions.?To that end, the Seabed 2030 project announced 3 new partnerships with both industry and government institutions – Hexagon, AusSeabed (Geoscience Australia), and Revelare Hydrospatial.
The mapping efforts are important for both navigation safety in the region, but also in the EEZ discussions for the individual countries to determine economic control over resources in the ocean.
“It was great to see so many participants and valuable contributions from the South Pacific Island states including the host nation, which put a focus on a region that has ocean conservation and a proud maritime heritage in its core,” said Martin Gutowski, Vice President of Sales and Marketing in APAC.
