What is submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV)? ?? SAV refers to an essential fish habitat that includes seagrasses and attached macro-algae. It provides numerous important ecological functions, making it a valuable habitat. SAV attracts animals for shelter and food but is especially vulnerable to coastal development and water quality degradation. This Seagrass Awareness Month, and year-round, we are working to maintain a positive impact on the environment. One way we do that is by planting SAVs in Florida's waters, such as Crystal River, Indian River Lagoon, Lake Istokpoga, and others! Do you need good water quality to grow seagrass, or does seagrass create good water quality? The answer is yes to both. ?? While you may think water quality has to be perfect before you plant seagrass, we actually plant in challenging conditions as well. Seagrass removes 40% of nutrients in the water column, as too many nutrients can cloud the water and fuel algal blooms. #SeagrassAwarenessMonth #Seagrass #CleanWater

There's only a few weeks left of manatee season! ?? If you haven't had a chance to see these gentle giants in person, the best viewing is at Three Sisters Springs, which is open to the public after our restoration efforts enhanced this beautiful area. We stabilized 1,200 LF of shoreline, restored the eroded areas surrounding the springs by utilizing soil bags to backfill undercut bank areas, and used limestone rock for reinforcement.
