Yesterday, February 19, 2025, Al Abdallah, our President & CEO of Urban of San Diego County, participated in a press conference announcing the launch of a new Teacher Housing Grant program called H.O.P.E. (Housing Opportunity for Public Educators). This initiative will make it realistic for 25 public school teachers from the San Diego Unified School District and Poway School District to teach where they work by giving them $40,000 to purchase their first home. With many of our best teachers struggling to make ends meet and housing costs growing increasingly unaffordable, public educators have been under enormous stress outside the classroom. This is an investment for our teachers and our students, parents, schools, and our community’s future. This vital partnership was privately funded by Lennar Home Construction. Special thanks to the team for developing this initiative go to Councilmember Marni von Wilpert, City of San Diego, Ricardo Flores, President and CEO, LISC, San Diego, San Diego Unified, and Poway Unified School District, and Al Abdallah. ?? Kicking Off CSUSM CLIMB's "In the Executive's Chair" Series! ?? Special Thanks to Michelle Tillman for inviting Al Abdallah, CEO of the Urban League of San Diego County, as our special guest to launch this exciting series. For those unfamiliar, the Center for Leadership Innovation and Mentorship Building (CLIMB) was established in August 2004 at California State University San Marcos?College of Business Administration. This year, it is proudly celebrating 20 years of serving the leadership development needs of our community through innovative research and collaboration with students, faculty, and various business and community organizations. Their "In the Executive's Chair" series is a key initiative of CLIMB, led by Rajnandini "Raj" Pillai, Ph.D., and David Berry, where industry leaders share their journeys, insights, and lessons learned. Al Abdallah shared an inspiring journey, from his service in the Army to his role at State Farm, and now as a passionate advocate for the underserved as CEO of the Urban League. "A labor of commitment to helping others" drives his daily work. He emphasized the importance of addressing 300 years of systemic inequity and the Urban League's mission of advocating for those who need it most. With a foundation built on five pillars—workforce development, education, housing, health, and justice and civic engagement—the Urban League's work is vital in our community.
