San Diego State University recently earned R1 status from the Carnegie Foundation, solidifying its place alongside elite research institutions like UC San Diego in San Diego County’s huge science community and as a national player with prestigious institutions like Harvard University and Caltech. “R1 status enhances our ability to secure increased funding, attract talent and expand interdisciplinary collaborations. While the focus is certainly on federal funding, R1s are able to attract higher levels of private-sector grants.
