San Diego State University student Yesenia Rodriguez Reyes attended Dr. Robert Luallen’s Host-Bacteria Interactions Workshop, designed for first-generation college students. There, she discovered a mystery involving nematodes, which led her to find answers and join the Luallen Lab to investigate the headless nematodes as part of the SDSU Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). “Doing hands-on research drives home the theory they learn in their classes. Not only do they get to experience research, but they're also providing us a benefit by discovering new things.” - Robert Luallen, SDSU College of Sciences Read the full story: https://tiny.cc/14anzz

Several decades ago, hippos were illegally brought into Colombia and abandoned in the early nineties. Since then, their population has multiplied by hundreds. They now roam freely, causing havoc by destroying crops and attacking farmers and citizens. Researchers are working actively to address this unusual problem and develop innovative solutions to manage the growing hippo population and effectively contain these animals. Smithsonian Magazine “If I lived in Colombia, I would be worried. Colombia has great biodiversity, and this is not a system that has evolved to support a mega-herbivore.” - Rebecca Lewison, an ecologist at San Diego State University's Coastal & Marine Institute Laboratory.
