Deep underground, scientists at Sanford Lab search for answers to the most fundamental questions about the universe.

关于我们

The Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) is operated by the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) with funding from the Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Our mission is to advance world class science and inspire learning across generations. Located in Lead, South Dakota, SURF advances our understanding of the universe by providing laboratory space deep underground, where sensitive physics experiments can be shielded from cosmic radiation. Researchers at SURF explore some of the most challenging questions facing 21st century physics, such as the origin of matter, the nature of dark matter and the properties of neutrinos. The facility also hosts experiments in other disciplines—including geology, biology and engineering. SURF is located at the former Homestake gold mine, which was a physics landmark long before being converted into a dedicated science facility. Nuclear chemist Ray Davis earned a share of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2002 for a Solar Neutrino Experiment he conducted 4,850 feet underground in the mine. Homestake closed in 2003, but the company donated the property to South Dakota in 2006 for use as an underground laboratory. That same year, philanthropist T. Denny Sanford donated $70 million to the project. The South Dakota Legislature also created the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority to operate the lab. The state Legislature has committed more than $40 million in state funds to the project, and South Dakota also obtained a $10 million Community Development Block Grant to help rehabilitate the facility.

  • Last month, Community Relations Specialist Rochelle Zens and Education, Outreach, and Experience Specialist Emily Berry represented SURF at the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) National Conference! As we observe Native American Heritage Month across the country, check out the incredible work AISES does to empower Indigenous students and professionals in STEM fields. https://aises.org/ #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #AISES2024

  • Last month, SURF employees and partners united to raise funds for the Foundation for Health. Last week, we had the privilege of presenting an $8,000 check to Laurie Wince, director of the Lead-Deadwood Foundation for Health. This donation includes $4,000 in matching funds from the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA), which oversees SURF. We are proud to support this organization in its mission to provide essential assistance to cancer patients across the Northern Hills and beyond.

  • Few people know the 370 miles of drifts and shafts beneath Lead as well as Tom Regan. After an incredible 55-year career at both Homestake Gold Mine and SURF, Tom retired on Friday, November 15. His journey is one of service, mentorship, and a vision that has shaped the legacy of America’s Underground Lab. Reflecting on his career, Tom shared, “The commitment to Homestake safety was built through blood, sweat, and tears. Whether at Homestake or SURF, it’s always been cutting-edge and top priority, and I’m proud to be a part of that.” As we honor Tom’s contributions, we also celebrate his ongoing dedication to preserving the history and spirit of this site for future generations. Join us in wishing Tom the very best in his well-deserved retirement! Read the full story about Tom and his career at https://lnkd.in/gQuHCeDh

  • SURF is more than a research lab; we are a place where science meets community. Through our STEM education programs, public outreach, and special projects, we’re inspiring curiosity and building connections to science every day. As South Dakota Day of Giving approaches on December 3, we’re inviting our community to be part of this mission! Your support helps us offer hands-on internships, spark young minds with STEM education, and nurture cultural connections through projects like the ?ha?glé?ka Wak?á? Ethnobotanical Garden. Whether big or small, every gift helps us make science accessible and impactful. ?? Learn more or donate at sanfordlab.org/foundation.

  • This Veterans Day, we recognize and celebrate the dedication and sacrifice of our country's veterans. Here at SURF, approximately 10% of our staff have served in the military, bringing a wealth of experience and a commitment to service that strengthens our entire team. Today, we thank our veterans for their service to our country and for the vital roles they fulfill at America's Underground Lab.
