The School District of Lancaster is honored to join the City of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and our community in celebrating Puerto Rican Heritage Month with the raising of the Puerto Rican flag in front of City Hall, which has been an official celebration in New York and other cities since 1998. This event pays tribute to the culture, rich history, and contributions of Puerto Ricans not only here in Lancaster but across the nation and around the world. Puerto Rican Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the influence of Puerto Rican culture in our communities, from art and music to food, education, and beyond. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience, and spirit of the Puerto Rican people who have made such an impact in our society. As we stand together together, we are reminded of the power of diversity and the importance of creating an inclusive space where all cultures and identities are celebrated. We are proud to be part of a community that values these stories and embraces the richness they bring to our shared experiences. #Lancasterpa #sdolpa #sdolproud #community

We are excited to share "The Chance to Wrestle," a PBS documentary featuring the McCaskey Red Tornado Girls Wrestling Team and a few familiar faces from our district! As the first district in Pennsylvania to approve an all-girls wrestling team, the School District of Lancaster is leading the way in empowering young women to step onto the mat and into history. Wrestling is now the fastest-growing high school sport in the nation, and this film beautifully captures the courage, determination, and passion of these trailblazing athletes as they navigate a traditionally male-dominated sport. We couldn’t be more proud of the McCaskey High School wrestlers for breaking barriers and setting a powerful example for others to follow. Their story is one of resilience, teamwork, and the belief that everyone deserves The Chance to Wrestle. Catch the documentary now on WPSU and join us in celebrating these young women and the legacy they’re building for generations to come. #SDoLPA #SDoLProud #athletics #education #community

This week, we join schools across Pennsylvania in recognizing Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness (ECYEH) Awareness Week. Our Families in Transition team—led by Lisette Rivera and Patricia Maila—traveled to Harrisburg to advocate for the more than 650 students in our district who are facing homelessness this school year. “Our numbers continue to rise, and unfortunately, the resources are becoming less and less in our community,” Rivera shared. “What limited funding has done for us is force us to pick and choose who we can give resources to,” added Maila. The McKinney-Vento Act guarantees critical rights and protections to students experiencing homelessness. Yet, with over 46,000 students statewide identified as homeless during the 2022-2023 school year, including over 2,000 in Dauphin, Lancaster, and York counties, the need for resources is greater than ever. To raise awareness, the Pennsylvania General Assembly has designated November 11-15 as Pennsylvania Education for Students Experiencing Homelessness Awareness Week and November 15 as "Red Shirt Day." On this day, Pennsylvanians are encouraged to wear red to show support for students experiencing homelessness. The School District of Lancaster remains committed to advocating for its students and addressing barriers to education caused by homelessness. #SDoLPA #SDoLProud #LancasterPa #education #homelessness #communityaction #strongertogether

This week, we’re shining a spotlight on Alexys Darrenkamp, Dean of Students at Burrowes Elementary School Although this is Alexys’ first year with the School District of Lancaster, she has already made an impact on both our students and staff. Her passion for education and people is evident in every interaction, and her commitment to creating a positive and supportive learning environment is inspiring. When Alexys talks about her job, her favorite part is clear: the students. “Building positive and strong relationships with students across our building is by far the most rewarding aspect of my role,” she shares. Each day, Alexys finds joy in seeing students grow, whether it’s through a small step toward a personal goal, a smile that shows their progress, or a check-in that reflects a positive change in their day. For Alexys, these moments of success, however small, are the heart of her work. But it’s not just the students who inspire her. The support and collaboration she has found within the Burrowes Elementary community have made her feel right at home. “My colleagues have shown me nothing but kindness and grace since I started,” Alexys says, expressing deep gratitude for the warmth she’s experienced. “They keep me going on the hardest days.” Alexys is equally appreciative of the Dean cohort and School Climate team at SDoL, who’ve created a safe space for her to express herself both personally and professionally. Thanks to their support, Alexys has been able to grow tremendously in a short amount of time and feels thankful for the incredible people she works alongside. While Alexys’ professional life is centered on education, she sees her role as so much more than that – it’s about people. “My number one goal has ALWAYS been to help people,” she says. Whether it’s offering a hug, a listening ear, or just a smile, Alexys is there for anyone who needs support. She believes that, at the core of her work, it’s not just about teaching – it’s about caring for people and making them feel valued. “I’ll be there for you,” she says, quoting the famous line from Friends, and it’s clear that Alexys truly lives by this sentiment. One of Alexys’ colleagues shared, “Every single day, Alexys shows up with a heart full of dedication, love, and happiness. She consistently provides clear communication to staff and students and implements interventions with confidence and care. She’s truly an invaluable member of our team.” Alexys has already become a pillar in the Burrowes community, and it’s clear that her heart, her work, and her passion will continue to inspire both students and colleagues alike for many years to come. Thank you, Alexys, for everything you do. We are beyond lucky to have you as part of the SDoL family! #SDoLPA #SDoLProud #education #community #strongertogether #teamwork

McCaskey High School students recently had the unique and powerful opportunity to meet Minnijean Brown-Trickey, a member of the historic Little Rock Nine, as part of the Leon Buddy Glover Public Service Project. Her journey in 1957, facing down resistance and armed guards to desegregate Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, brought the fight for civil rights to the national stage. Her story of resilience and courage in the face of adversity left an indelible mark on our students, reminding us all of the power of standing up for justice. Ms. Brown-Trickey’s time with us allowed students to ask questions and engage directly with a living piece of American history. Through her continued work in civil rights and social justice, she has inspired generations to believe in the power of change. We are grateful for this experience that encourages our students to carry forward her legacy of courage and equality. She will be doing a public lecture alongside at Educator, Jane Elliott TONIGHT at 7:00 pm. Doors open at 6:00 pm with the film screening beginning at 6:20. Elliott will begin her lecture at 7 p.m. #SDoLPA #SDoLProud #education #community #strongertogether
