Introducing the 2024 Goalkeepers Champions! This list recognizes 10 individuals who are tackling one of the world's toughest issues: malnutrition. As we approach 2030, bold action is essential to achieving the Global Goals, and these changemakers prove that progress is possible: Beza Beshah Haile, Founder of HOPE-Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, is working on transforming prenatal care in Ethiopia through her advocacy for folic acid fortification and support for families facing neural tube defects. Dr. Bhavani Shankar, Professorial Research Fellow in Food Systems, Nutrition and Sustainability, University of Sheffield, is increasing access and affordability to nutrient-dense foods in rural India through market innovations and research on equitable food systems. Dr. Jemimah Njuki, Chief of Economic Empowerment, UN Women, is facilitating women to exercise their own agency in nutrition and agriculture, while addressing the paradox that many women food producers face food insecurity. Ladidi Kuluwa Bako-Aiyegbusi,mni, Director and Head, Nutrition Department, Nigeria Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, oversees the ministry’s partnership to fortify bouillon cubes with the nutrients that children and expectant mothers need most. Secretary Lilian dos Santos Rahal, National Secretary for Food and Nutrition Security, Ministry of Social Development and Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger, Brazil, is combatting hunger in Brazil through food security programs focused on family farming and support for vulnerable populations. Dr. Nancy Krebs, Professor of Pediatrics, Nutrition, University of Colorado School of Medicine, is advancing research on maternal health in the face of climate change, demonstrating the vital role of nutrition in mitigating extreme heat's effects. Ratan N. Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, is driving large-scale nutrition initiatives across India, from child development services to micronutrient fortification. Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, Minister of Health, Rwanda, is revolutionizing maternal nutrition with the implementation of a maternal micronutrient supplementation program. Dr. Tahmeed Ahmed, Executive Director, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, is developing microbiome-directed therapeutic food to fight malnutrition in Bangladesh and beyond, improving childhood health outcomes. Dr. Zahra Hoodbhoy, Associate Professor, Pediatrics and Child Health, Aga Khan University, Pakistan, is championing maternal health in Pakistan with next-gen prenatal vitamins and AI tools that empower community health workers.
