?? Housing inequality in Kinshasa, DRC ?? Home to 17 million people, #Kinshasa is projected to become Africa’s largest megacity by 2030. However, 75% of the population lives in informal settlements, struggling with unaffordable housing, insecure land tenure, and inadequate infrastructure.? ?? Our new report with the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), “Urbanization for the Few: Soaring Housing Inequality in Kinshasa,” exposes how rapid urbanization deepens inequality, with housing policies favoring elites and private investors. ?? Without urgent action, the current model of urban development risks further entrenching economic disparities.? ?? “The housing crisis is receiving increased political attention in all countries, including in the DRC and its capital, Kinshasa, which provides an important opportunity to undertake bold measures that fulfill people’s right to housing. This means housing policies and practices that put people over profit,” says Paula Sevilla Nú?ez, a researcher on housing justice at IIED.? ?? This calls for the creation of new spaces, partnerships and infrastructures to challenge established hierarchies, and promoting new relationships anchored in lived experiences and local ownership." ???Our Future: "The future of peacebuilding lies in fostering equitable global and translocal collaborations, creating new spaces and infrastructures to challenge established hierarchies. Civic actors who live and work in conflict must lead these efforts and have their voices heard in global forums and institutions, which are often dominated by elites from Western countries or government actors." ???On Practical Recommendations: "Donors should ensure partnerships are long-term, adaptable, and locally driven through multi-year funding agreements instead of short-term, project-based grants. Additionally, mainstreaming peace efforts means engaging religious actors and traditional chiefs, as they hold significant influence within their communities and can play a key role in promoting social cohesion." ?? As the first OECD Development Forum on Development, Peace and Stability takes place, this is a critical moment to explore how a #PeopleCenteredJustice (PCJ) approach to resilience can empower communities in politically estranged, conflict-affected, & fragility-affected settings. ?? #PCJ offers a pragmatic and essential approach to strengthening people’s resilience by offering a pathway to resolving disputes, improving access to public resources, and amplifying local voices, ensuring decision-makers address vulnerabilities and uphold rights during times of complex crises. ?? A recent paper by Food for the Hungry, Inc.’s Jonathan Papoulidis and #NYUCIC’s Swati Mehta and Nate Edwards proposes a framework that promotes people-centered justice (PCJ) as a vital but missing element of resilience and the key to its success. ??
