I had a wonderful time presenting my workshop on ageism in design at San Diego Design Week. There was a great turnout! It was so nice to see people, not only recognizing how they might be unintentionally reinforcing ageist views through their design, but showing genuine interest in wanting to help reimagine and change the often-negative narrative about growing older. We were honored to host a UXR-focused trek stop last night as part of SD Design Trek & San Diego Design Week! As a newer UX org on the scene, we appreciated having the opportunity to share more about what we do and our vision for strengthening the local research community. Today I had the opportunity to attend “The Invisible -ism: Disrupting Ageism in Design,” hosted by Lisa Rill, PhD in San Diego Design Week. This workshop was a powerful reminder of the importance of educating ourselves about ageism and fostering inclusivity within our communities. It brought me new perspectives on how aging is often stigmatized and how discriminatory attitudes can limit opportunities as people grow older. We were encouraged to recognize how ageist behaviors are rooted in society and how, as designers, we might unintentionally reinforce them. The change starts with awareness—recognizing these biases and questioning societal norms that view "old" as negative and "young" as inherently good. As designers, we are responsible for creating inclusive spaces, communications, and branding that celebrate all ages. Simple shifts in language, such as not comparing age with health conditions, can make a significant impact. After all, someone 85 can be just as vibrant and healthy as someone much younger. Let’s be empathetic, open-minded, and reflective about our beliefs about aging. Ageism exists, often unnoticed, in our daily lives. But by changing perceptions, we can help people embrace aging as an opportunity to experience new growth, community, and purpose. “Society is unity in diversity.” – George Herbert Mead, philosopher #socialdesign
