Another Successful Family Financial Fun Night! On?March 20, San Diego Center for Economics Education returned to?Jamul Elementary School?to conduct another?Family Financial Fun Night, and it delivered. Families moved through hands-on stations that introduced kids to real-life money choices: earning, saving, spending, and giving. It’s always great to see students thinking through tradeoffs, setting goals, and connecting school learning to life outside the classroom. This wasn’t our first time at Jamul, and the turnout once again showed strong support for financial literacy in the community. We’ve also held FFFNs nearby at Lindo Park and Lakeside Farms, and the energy has been consistent. Families want this kind of learning. Big thanks to?Andrea Luce?and?DeSheila Manuel?for extending their school day to volunteer and lead activity stations.?Greg Wall, Board President of the JAMUL-DULZURA UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT, also jumped in at a station and connected with families throughout the evening.?Jeanie Machado Tyler, Vice President of Instruction at?Cuyamaca College, joined the team at a station as well and helped reinforce the message that financial education starts early and builds toward future opportunity. We also appreciated?Liz Bystedt, Superintendent of JDUSD, who welcomed everyone, helped serve pizza, and kept everything on track throughout the evening. And thank you to?Louis Lange, Financial Advisor with CALPRO Network and SDCEE Advisory Board member, for being available to answer general personal finance questions from the adults who came with their children. Shout out to?Cuyamaca College?for providing backpacks filled with Cuyamaca swag, and to?Supervisor Joel Anderson?for recognizing the effort it takes to show up and participate by providing certificates of recognition for both students and their caregivers.?Aya Ibrahim, from Supervisor Anderson’s office, welcomed families on the Supervisor’s behalf and jumped in to help at one of the activity stations too. Up next:?Family Financial Fun Day?at the?City Heights branch of the San Diego City Library?on?March 29. Preregistration is required—just contact SDCEE Director?Anthony Zambelli?(a-zambelli@sdcee.org) for details. Thanks to the Jamul team for the warm welcome and partnership. On behalf of SDCEE, we appreciated the opportunity. #FinancialLiteracy #FinancialEducation #PersonalFinance #CommunityEngagement #FamilyEngagement #SDCEE #FFFN #EconEd #CuyamacaCollege #JoelAnderson California Council on Economic Education Council for Economic Education

A busy week traveling for economic and personal finance education! Last week took me coast to coast, starting in Philadelphia at the NAEE Spring Conference, where I had the opportunity to hear Patrick T. Harker, President of the Philadelphia Fed, speak on economic education and financial literacy. I asked him a question about the future of the U.S. dollar as the international reserve currency, an important topic with global economic implications. Then it was on to Burlingame for the California Council for the Social Studies (CCSS) Annual Conference, where I co-presented with Joshua Mitton on updates to California’s new personal finance high school graduation requirement. We shared resources to help teachers bring personal finance education into their classrooms and better prepare students for real-world financial decisions. Great to connect with so many educators and advocates working to strengthen economic and financial literacy!

Anthony Zambelli, Director of the San Diego Center for Economics Education, attended the Kempton Literacy Academy Honor Circle assembly to present certificates from Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe, recognizing students and their caregivers for participating in a recent Family Financial Fun Night conducted by SDCEE. Originally planned as an outdoor event, the assembly moved indoors due to inclement weather. Students and their caregivers joined from their classrooms, while awards were presented via a Zoom broadcast from Principal Janet Nellys Josa's office. Tony had the opportunity to personally congratulate each student and caregiver as Ms. Josa described the event and called their names. Reflecting on the assembly, he said, “It was impressive to see the emphasis on both academic growth and character development. It was heartwarming to see an entire school community come together to celebrate learning in so many ways.†The screenshot from the Zoom meeting captures this moment, with each individual classroom displayed on one big screen, a true testament to the community’s commitment to learning, no matter the circumstances.
