On March 21, SD1’s Water Resources team teamed up with the Banklick Watershed Council for a creek cleanup along Banklick Creek- Kenton County’s largest waterway and one of Northern Kentucky’s most important natural resources. Led by Casey Apgar and Mindy Scott, the crew stepped away from the desk and into the creek to help protect the environment we all share. “We believe in protecting and improving the health of our local waterways—not just through data and analysis but by getting our hands dirty and making a visible impact," said Mindy Scott, Environmental Asset Manager at SD1. “Events like this remind us that small actions add up and that collaboration between organizations, volunteers and the community is key to long-term water quality improvements.” Her advice for anyone thinking about jumping in: “Just do it! You don’t need to be a scientist or expert—just someone who cares about making our environment cleaner and healthier. You’ll meet like-minded people, learn more about your local watershed and leave knowing you’ve contributed to something bigger than yourself.” This cleanup is just one example of how we’re putting our Environmental Leadership goal for Fiscal Year 2025 into action. All of SD1’s enterprise goals directly support our mission to protect public health, property and the environment. Big thanks to everyone who came together to care for Banklick Creek and help keep Northern Kentucky’s waterways clean for the future. Managing Northern Kentucky's Wastewater and Storm Water
关于我们
Welcome to Sanitation District No. 1 (SD1). We proudly provide the Northern Kentucky region with wastewater and storm water services to protect public health, property and the environment. Our infrastructure also supports the economic vitality of the community we serve. Twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year, our experts work as a team to take away and clean the dirty water created by Northern Kentucky residents when they flush, brush and shower, and the storm water that collects during rains or snow thaws. We work with partners across our region and beyond to find innovative and cost-effective solutions for our community.

SD1 provides wastewater services to 1 in every 10 Kentuckians. But how do we do it? Our team manages more than 1,600 miles of sanitary sewer lines, 129 pump stations and three advanced wastewater treatment plants, treating millions of gallons of wastewater every day. From the Newport Aquarium to NKU, from Crestview Hills Town Center to the Kenton County Library, our underground network stretches beneath the places you know and love—an unseen but essential system keeping our communities clean and healthy. To put that in perspective, if you laid all 1,600 miles of our sewer pipes end to end, they would stretch from Northern Kentucky to Ontario, Canada, and back again. That’s how vast and critical this infrastructure is to protecting public health and the environment. But it’s not just about moving and treating water. Our work prevents harmful bacteria, viruses and pollutants from reaching our waterways, safeguarding our region’s natural resources. And like any critical infrastructure, it requires ongoing investment, innovation and expertise to keep it running efficiently. If you work in water, wastewater or infrastructure, you know the challenges: aging systems, regulatory requirements and evolving community needs. How is your organization tackling these challenges? #SD1 #InfrastructureMatters #WaterIndustry #WastewaterManagement #NorthernKentucky #CleanWater #PublicHealth #WastewaterMatters

At SD1, engineering isn’t just about plans and projects- it’s about maintaining and improving wastewater and stormwater systems that directly impact Northern Kentucky’s communities. Every day, our engineers work to ensure these essential systems function safely and efficiently. This Engineers Week (Feb. 16–22, 2025), we recognize the expertise and dedication of our team. From those who laid the groundwork decades ago to today’s engineers solving complex challenges, their work keeps our region’s infrastructure strong. Last month, we celebrated the retirement of Bob Wilson after nearly 30 years at SD1. His knowledge and mentorship have helped shape the team that will continue this critical work into the future. To all engineers, past, present, and future, thank you for your commitment to building and maintaining the infrastructure that serves Northern Kentucky every day. #EngineersWeek #SD1Engineering #InfrastructureMatters #ThankYouEngineers

Congratulations to Jansen Sulla! We’re proud to celebrate Jansen Sulla, one of SD1’s Plant Mechanics, as Enzweiler Building Institute’s Student of the Month for January! ?? Jansen, a dedicated welding student, has shown exceptional learning abilities, a positive attitude and a relentless drive to grow in his craft. His instructor describes him as an outstanding student, and we couldn’t agree more! "We are so proud of Jansen and his accomplishments at work and in the academic/trade school environment," says Joe Baxter, SD1’s Director of Operations. "Jansen consistently brings hard work and dedication to the plant every day. His positive energy motivates those around him and he continues to refine his mechanical skills while growing his passion for welding. When he first joined us, he had little experience in industrial maintenance and started off timid. But through perseverance and determination, he has proven that with the right mindset, you can master anything. Jansen grinds every day! His commitment to continuous improvement and craftsmanship is commendable—from fixing equipment to fabricating new parts from scratch." Keep up the great work, Jansen! The future is bright for skilled trades professionals like you. #SD1Proud #SkilledTrades #Welding #CareerGrowth

? In the mid-1800s, combined sewers were considered state-of-the-art technology. ? Today, these systems face challenges. During heavy rainfall, they can overflow, impacting communities and waterways including those right here in Northern Kentucky. That’s why SD1 is committed to Clean H2O40—our plan to modernize and improve the sewer system to better manage wastewater and stormwater across our region. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dYhp3Hcy
