One of the best parts of working at Santa Clara University is being surrounded by the energy and enthusiasm of students who are already doing the real work to make our campus, community and world a more sustainable place. It's easy to get jaded when you're disconnected, and witnessing dedication and leadership of these students fills me with such hope!
SCU students met with industry leaders and city officials for an evening of connection, celebration and selfies! At this year’s Sustainability Careers Meetup, students engaged with City of Santa Clara officials and leaders from Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the city’s not-for-profit municipal electric utility. Hosted in partnership with the Career Center, Enrollment Management Division, and the SCU Center for Sustainability, this networking event provided valuable connections and insights into careers in clean energy and public service. The evening closed with a dinner honoring our newest student cohort of Silicon Valley Power Sustainable Futures Scholars and Fellows for their dedication to shaping a more sustainable future. The dinner opened with words of encouragement and thanks from Santa Clara University President Julie Sullivan, City of Santa Clara Councilmember Sudhanshu Jain, SVP Chief Electric Utility Officer Manuel Pineda, and Lindsey Kalkbrenner, Director for the Center of Sustainability. A huge thank you to our community and university partners and guests for making this event and the SVPSF program so impactful. Santa Clara University recently installed our first 100% solar-powered EV chargers. These cutting-edge chargers generate clean, renewable energy to power our maintenance fleet with zero reliance on the grid. “This installation is an important facet of our climate action work,†said Sean Collins, Santa Clara University’s Assistant Vice President for University Operations. “By integrating Paired Power’s solar EV chargers into our operations, we’re not only generating renewable energy to charge our fleet, we are also modeling for our students how an organization can take responsibility for reducing carbon pollution.â€

What’s most important to teach about sustainability and how can we do it in every field? To develop your own answers to these questions, see Teaching Sustainability Competencies across the Disciplines - A Guide for Instructors, co-edited by Chad Raphael and Sarah Young, and written by the AASHE Scaling Up Sustainability across the Curriculum Community. The guide summarizes and compares the major sustainability competencies defined by educational experts convened by UNESCO and the Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE). The guide’s major contribution is to illustrate a wide variety of ways to integrate the competencies into courses in every discipline by identifying:? ? Sample learning outcomes ? Examples of curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment of student learning ? Relevant examples of the scholarship of teaching and learning. Aspiring sustainability educators, and professional development leaders who support instructors to integrate sustainability across the curriculum, will find the guide useful for sparking faculty members’ creativity. As sustainability competencies become more widely adopted in higher education, the guide can also help instructors align their course-level learning objectives with the learning goals of their departmental majors, minors, general education requirements, and certificate programs. Published open access under a Creative Commons license, the guide can be adapted and translated freely, and it will be updated regularly with new resources. It has been piloted successfully as a resource in Santa Clara University’s summer workshops on sustainability and justice across the curriculum. https://lnkd.in/gmFjdxyW SCU Center for Sustainability #SustainabilityEducation

With top Silicon Valley employers like Apple, Meta, LinkedIn, and Google just a short drive from campus, Santa Clara University is perfectly situated to help students kick off their careers. And now, thanks to a little help from Bucky’s Closet—a free campus thrift store for business attire opening September 26—students have access to the threads that'll help them get ahead. Bucky’s Closet will offer its wares for free with the option to give financial donations to help keep the store running. The student-run store will operate all year long. ??
