We know the storm has displaced voters, damaged polling places, and halted the sending and receiving of election mail across Western NC. Our voting rights attorneys are monitoring these developments as state officials update their plans to administer elections in the impacted counties. This issue is near and dear to my heart. I cast my very first ballot 20 years ago in Chapel Hill as a recent graduate of UNC. I thankfully didn’t have to navigate many of the onerous voting requirements that are now a part of North Carolina’s election laws. That experience launched a habit of voting that has continued through present day and shapes the work I do today at Southern Coalition for Social Justice. In 2024, she earned her Master of Laws (LL.M.) with distinction from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, where she was a Dean’s Merit Scholar. At Penn, Aiswarya represented the Environmental Law Project and was recognized as a Penn Climate Leader Fellow. She also contributed as a research assistant to Professors Shelly Welton, Rangita de Silva de Alwis, and Beth Simmons. Her expertise centers around?climate justice,?just energy transitions, and?urban resilience to climate change. A passionate advocate for?inter-species egalitarianism?and?deep ecology, Aiswarya is committed to driving the systemic transformation needed for a sustainable future. Tre, a NAACP Legal Defense Fund Marshall-Motley Scholar and 2nd-year law student at Yale Law School, played an important role on our Justice System Reform team, advocating for racial justice.
