What an experience to present at the presidency with many excellencies, distinguished delegates, and esteemed colleagues attending at the “Reducing Methane from Organic Waste” high-level launch event and ISWA welcome such an important and significant Declaration!
Moments ago, the High-Level Launch of the #COP29 Reducing Methane from Organic Waste Declaration came to a close in the Blue Zone in Baku, at COP29 Azerbaijan. ISWA President James Law represented the Association at this meeting, standing in solidarity with national and organisational members of the community that convened to emphasise their continuing endorsement of the Global Methane Pledge and applaud the COP Presidency's initiative to highlight the important role of waste management in reducing methane emissions. Inger Andersen, Executive Director UN Environment Programme, underscored the critical need for immediate action: “We need to see ambition, and we need to see action. Waste is growing, and methane from organic waste represents a significant challenge. Yet, by turning ‘waste’ into wealth, we can make meaningful progress.” The message of this declaration is very closely aligned to ISWA’s own Declaration for COP29, released in October, which highlights the critical role of organic waste management in curbing methane emissions. James Law urged the present delegates to "work together to turn waste into opportunity, pollution into progress, and methane reduction into a tangible climate victory. The stakes could not be higher" The session emphasised the need for immediate action, international collaboration, and innovation to address methane emissions effectively. ISWA is proud and excited to be part of a momentous occasion in the COP's history. We look forward to the progress that will surely follow this strong message and directive.

The crew spent the day at a landfill site in Carlsbad, CA, performing trenching and installing 8” lateral pipes as part of a new Landfill Gas Collection and Control System. From reviewing safety protocols and Crew Action Plans to precision trenching and pipe fusing, their attention to detail was important. Working near an active landing strip added unique challenges, including FAA requirements for high-visibility flags on equipment and strict adherence to access protocols. The crew tackled every task with professionalism and efficiency, ensuring the project stays on track. Impressive teamwork and dedication all around! #LandfillGas #SafetyFirst #SCSEngineers #Sustainability #WasteManagement

Thanks to the The Trade Council of Denmark in North America - Energy and Environment, top leaders of the ABC went to Denmark last month to see (practically) everything #DanishBiogas! ABC Chair Bernie Sheff, Executive Director Patrick Serfass and VP of Policy Heather Dziedzic toured multiple biogas facilities and biogas technology suppliers across?#Denmark, learning?about the most advanced biogas technologies in use. Denmark is one of the world’s leading nations when it comes to innovative agricultural practices, waste management, and biogas value chain solutions. In fact, biogas makes up nearly 40% of Denmark’s the natural gas consumption, and the Danish government has committed to ensuring the country’s gas grid is #100% biomethane by 2030! Biogas is considered a key element in the sustainability of Denmark’s #agricultural sector and the #decarbonization of Danish industry. The group included friends from ABC member companies Roeslein Alternative Energy, Bioenergy Devco, M-RETS, and Canadian Biogas Association , among others, led by Frederik Hyldgaard Thomsen and Alex Ripley. The first 2 days included presentations and/or tours from the Danish Energy Agency, State of Green Denmark, the Danish Agriculture and Food Council, Biogas Danmark, the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark, Energinet, Ammongas, Gemidan Ecogi A/S, Grainit, Sustainable Bio Solutions, Nature Energy, and Bigadan A/S, which operates the largest RNG digester system in the world, handling ~1 million tons of biomass/year and producing more than 41 million nM3 of biomethane each year! What's something we're thankful for?? Our Viper Imaging and Fire Rover Systems! Fires are a common occurrence at landfills and recycling facilities. The Viper Imaging (at the Landfill) and Fire Rover (at the Recycling Center) systems detect heat and alert staff of hot spots in our working face, tipping floor, and bale storage. The Fire Rover can also suppress the fire until the fire department arrives. Help us not have to use these systems by disposing of batteries safely at our Electronics Recovery Center or by using the after-hours drop box at our recycling campus!
