The 2025 Paul H. Boase Prize winner, Dr. Walid Afifi, presented the prize's annual lecture on March 3. ??? Dr. Afifi is a communication professor from the University of California Santa Barbara and, in the lecture, discussed his work around how mental health is affected by uncertainty, noting the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Boase Prize was first awarded in 2003 and honors scholars who have made an impactful contribution to the communication field. The prize is named after the founding director of the School of Interpersonal Communication, which is now the School of Communication Studies.

At the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts competition, five of our students received Awards of Excellence for their work at WOUB Public Media. ?? Will DeBlock, Parker Kopronica, Hailey Hollinger and Tim Hanna received an award for their work on the Gridiron Glory Season 25 promo. Donovan Varney received an award in the Television Hard News category. Our students were selected from a pool of more than 2,000 entries across more than 300 colleges and universities. Theme parks are magical, but have you ever wondered how the magic is made? ? Professors Beth Novak and John Bowditch teach students just that in their class Storytelling, Technology and Digital Media in Theme Parks. Throughout the semester-long course, they teach students the secrets behind immersive attractions. The class ends with a week-long trip to Orlando, Florida, for an up-close look at Disney World and Universal Studios.
