? Empowering Electrochemistry Series ? We're thrilled to spotlight the innovative work of Gastón O. Larrazábal, Ib Chorkendorff, Brian Seger, and their team at the DTU - Technical University of Denmark! With the support of a Scribner, LLC cell fixture, their team achieved high energy efficiency electrochemical CO2?reduction at industrially relevant current densities in an AEM-based MEA-type electrolyzer. ?? Key Findings: · Porous silver filtration membranes are demonstrated as effective gas-diffusion electrodes for CO2?reduction to CO at high current densities · A partial current density for CO of up to ~200 mA/cm2?was achieved at a cell voltage of ~3.3 V with minimal H2?production · CO2?cross-over leads to a nonstoichiometric decrease in outlet flow rate from the cathodic compartment ? Impact: This work sheds light on the critical need to consider CO2 utilization and to address membrane cross-over in MEA-type electrolyzers to optimize CO2 reduction. ?? Empowering Electrochemistry Series ?? We're thrilled to highlight the work of Varada Menon Palakkal, @Xiuping Zhu, Chris Arges, et al. Their team leveraged Scribner, LLC's 857 RFB test system and RFB cell fixture to investigate, for the first time, a zero-gap design for a Thermally Regenerative Ammonia Battery (TRAB) with flow of the anolyte and catholyte, analogous to a redox flow battery setup. ?? Key Findings: ? Their ammonia flow battery (AFB) set the standard for high-power density TRABs (280 W m–2 at 55°C). ? The system demonstrated an 87.6% improvement in thermal efficiency (ηth) over previous TRAB designs. ?? Impact: This research marks a significant step toward utilizing low-grade waste heat (T < 130°C) for energy storage. The advancements in TRAB performance can be attributed to their zero-gap cell design, highly conductive (and low-cost) QASEBS anion exchange membrane, and SPEEK ionomer electrode coatings. ??
