Check out this insightful Today Show segment on the “Screen Time Impact on Kids’ Brains.” That’s right, screen time is now recognized as a health issue.? NBC’s Vicky Nguyen visited Cincinnati Children's to interview experts Dr. John Hutton, Dr. Nehal Parikh, and Dr. Lisa Hunter, who are leading groundbreaking research on how excessive screen time — particularly with smartphones, tablets, and other devices — can impact brain development in young children. Their findings highlight that high levels of screen time can negatively affect key areas of brain development related to reading, language, and decision-making.? One of the key takeaways from the experts is that parents and caregivers are a child’s first and most important teachers. Digital health in kids starts with modeling and teaching healthy screen habits at home. At Screen Sanity, we agree, but we also know that parents can’t do it alone. Today's youth are facing a mental health crisis, and the side effects linked to excessive screen use — such as loneliness, comparison, and anxiety — continue to emerge. In fact, 44% of American teens report feeling persistent sadness and hopelessness. And parents are understandably concerned, with screentime and social media topping their list of health worries. The good news? Health providers are in a unique position to help. A study in the Journal of Adolescent Medicine found that a brief 3-5 minute conversation between a pediatrician and a teen about social media or tech can lead to measurable improvements in digital habits. However, less than 5% of pediatric residents surveyed felt equipped to have that conversation. That’s why in 2024, Screen Sanity launched the Pediatric Provider Program — to support both families and health providers in addressing these concerns. This program offers in-person digital health training sessions to empower healthcare professionals with the education, tools, and practical resources (such as exam room posters) they need to integrate digital health into pediatric care. As Dr. Julia Ehly of Pediatric Associates shared, “Now, thanks to Screen Sanity and the exam-room poster, I have an easy and effective way to discuss digital safety with families.” After a successful pilot in 2023, and an impactful 2024, Screen Sanity is ready to expand in 2025, having already served 65 providers. We are committed to increasing our reach and supporting healthcare providers as they guide families through the digital age. Won’t you consider linking arms with us too? We are hoping to continue and expand our program in Kansas City in 2025 and beyond in 2026. If you know of someone or an organization that would be interested in financially supporting this initiative, we’d love to hear from you. #ScreenSanity #DigitalHealth #PediatricCare #ScreenTime #Parenting #MentalHealth #DigitalSafety #TechInHealthcare #HealthProviders #PediatricHealth?
