I have always loved this time of year. I start listening to holiday music in November. I throw an annual party. Decorate cookies so badly that people think they’re the work of small children. And, I make my little dog Izzy suffer through wearing a Santa hat for as long as she’ll tolerate it. But one aspect of the holidays tends to make me nostalgic. Whenever I listen to Auld Lang Syne, I get a little misty. That song brings to mind those who are no longer in my life. Of years gone by and the inevitable undesirable aspects of aging. And how long we can hold on to what we hold most dear. I finally looked at the lyrics and the meaning behind them. The notion of old friends meeting up, enjoying one another, and sharing a “cup of kindness” is really quite beautiful. And hopeful. No matter how long it’s been, that connection exists. It got me thinking of the people I’ve gotten to see lately. In the past few months, I’ve had the chance to reconnect with college friends. Former colleagues from my very first job in New York and later in Sydney. My team from my first big leadership role in Chicago. People in business who taught me or inspired me along the way. When you’re building a company, it can be all about finding the new, but these last few months have given us such an appreciation for those who’ve been with us for years and decades. You are such a part of The Scratch Collective and what we’re building. We are so appreciative of you. And we’re wishing you the very best in 2024. Here’s hoping we get to share a cup of kindness one day soon.
