Hance Taplin, who has worked with such brands as lululemon and Nike, launched?By Way of Dallas?in 2012 as part of a personal effort to rebrand the city. Through his streetwear line and creative collaborations with the likes of Erykah Badu and the Dallas Mavericks’ Dwight Powell, he has offered fresh takes on his adopted hometown. So when?Scottish Rite for Children?reached out about a possible partnership, there was a particular reason why his interest was piqued. “One of the things that struck a chord for me was the fact they made all their prosthetics in-house,” he says. “It’s rare for a product to be made here in Dallas from scratch. It got my wheels spinning.” Scottish Rite was founded more than 100 years ago as a facility to treat pediatric polio, and it expanded to become a renowned orthopedic care hospital. Even today, the hospital offers programs that can greatly offset or completely cover many prosthetic costs that are often not covered by insurance, such as secondary prostheses (such as sports legs) or activity-specific upper limb prostheses. Because pediatric prostheses are subjected to more wear and tear, and growth spurts mean they’re worn for shorter periods of time, most of the costly tech advancements have been limited to the adult prosthesis world. A 16- or 17-year-old patient greatly extends the life of the limb, making it easier to justify the investment in a higher-tech device. But Scottish Rite has increasingly incorporated 3D printing and microprocessors in kids’ prosthetics that can both be programmed by and communicate with smartphones. What they wanted Taplin’s help with was to add some fun. After touring Scottish Rite’s prosthetics facility, Taplin was inspired to consider what a community collaboration would look like. He pitched what was then The Richards Group (now?LERMA/) about ways to approach local influencers and advocates. His selling point was simple: “Let’s ask them to create art for a purpose, and that purpose is for prosthetics.” Taplin started with his personal network. He knew marketing guru Jordan Rogers from his time at Nike. Rogers had a connection to the Dallas Cowboys social media manager, who allowed them to lock in Dak Prescott. Prescott may not be known for his artistic skills, but Taplin tapped him, and others, for a different reason. “Beauty and art are all subjective,” he says. “I didn’t want to pick the best artists in the community. It wasn’t about that. Their skill sets are somewhere else, but it was about their effort.” Taplin hopes to continue and expand the work BWOD is doing with the hospital and its patients. “It is the most meaningful thing that I have ever seen,” he says. “If I could quit everything and focus on this collaboration, I would do it in a heartbeat.” Read the full story from Will Maddox here: https://lnkd.in/g4YPHknw
