Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Scottish Connections in North America Shine Bright! Alexandria, Virginia Celebrates Links.
The Scottish Christmas Walk Parade in Alexandria, Virginia generously sponsored by Wegmans Food Markets is back again this Saturday.
As with many in the Washington DC area, I have been connected to the parade for several years. What a joy! The goodwill and good cheer it spreads during this special season is truly wonderful.
The Visit Alexandria team do such a marvelous job alongside a host of volunteers in bringing forward this tradition each year.
The city of Alexandria just outside Washington is a place to visit, enjoy, and experience. It was founded in 1749 by enterprising Scots and is actually named after a Scot - John Alexander. It has a long time sister connection with Dundee, Scotland. Alexandria and Dundee, Virginia and Scotland have rich historical links and modern ties.
Come and visit! I’ll personally show you around this beautiful spot.
For the parade you will see street corners and windows adorned with the Saltire, Scottish university alumni groups marching proudly, pipers and drummers filling the air with inspiration, Scottish clans and heritage groups wielding their colours, Scottish Westies prancing in their confident stride, businesses and local charities reminding us of the importance of community. And The Scottish Government in the USA is right in the mix of the parade.
Then there is the Scottish North American Community Conference that happens in Alexandria around the edges of the parade.
Now in its 21st year, SNACC was founded and is organized by the American-Scottish Foundation, The Council of Scottish Clans and Associations, St Andrew's Society of Detroit, Chicago Scots, Scottish American Women’s Society, Scottish Studies Society, and St. Andrew's Society of Toronto.
The conference this year will be kicked off by Colin Gray and include a number of excellent sessions, speakers, and panelists.
Scottish Connections in Alexandria, Virginia, and across North America shine bright. This parade of people continues to offer a promising opportunity.
I’m grateful to be connected with so many thoughtful people dedicated to nurturing and growing these links between Scotland and North America.
Let’s Keep Marching Forward!
