This week, we co-hosted a bustling cleantech mixer event with the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship, the Graduate Entrepreneurship Club, the Sustainability Initiative, and the Energy and Clean Tech Club. We are truly fortunate to have so many students at CMU pursuing cleantech and climate tech entrepreneurship????? ?

Yesterday, we hosted a new event at the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship: the CleanTech Startup Mixer. For the past few months, I’ve heard from many students across campus who are interested in entrepreneurship and sustainability but struggle to find ways to connect with people in other departments. To encourage some cross-pollination, we reached out to different groups across campus with a simple message: “If you care about climate solutions, meet us here on October 1st for free pizza.” (Turns out the classic ?? never fails!) We weren’t sure how many would show up, but within two weeks, over 100 students signed up! At the event, we organized a sign-in table and used color-coded nametags to indicate different areas of expertise (red = business, purple = software, etc.). Professor Meredith Meyer Grelli and I encouraged students to network with people wearing different colored nametags and led an interactive associative thinking exercise. At the end, students pitched their new, off-the-wall ideas to the room—but more importantly, they had the chance to meet and collaborate with peers from across campus. Who knows, all it takes is one of those pitches to turn into the next big venture for this to be a huge success! Thank you Prof Grelli for leading the charge and everyone who participated and sponsored the event!
