关于我们
At Scion, we believe forests have the potential to transform the way we live—driving innovation, sustainability, and economic growth. As a Crown Research Institute, we specialise in forestry, industrial biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing. Our work spans sustainable forest management, tree improvement, biosecurity, risk mitigation, wood processing, bioenergy, and the development of biomaterials from waste streams. We also provide expertise in forestry-based ecosystem services to support land-use decision-making. Through collaboration with researchers, industry partners, and government, we help shape a resilient, low-carbon, and circular economy. Our research extends to land-based biosecurity, soil and freshwater management, climate change adaptation and mitigation, indigenous forestry, and high-value manufacturing.

?? Update on Scion Research Burns ?? Our upcoming experimental burns, part of Scion’s Extreme Wildfire Programme, are scheduled for March 3-14, but weather conditions may cause delays. With rain expected around March 3, we will closely monitor the situation and begin as soon as it’s safe. These burns will test new theories on wildfire spread in barley and wheat stubble paddocks. In collaboration with New Zealand and international researchers, we plan to conduct 4-8 burns over several days, depending on weather and harvest progress. This work is a key part of Scion’s investment in wildfire risk management and modelling to protect forests and communities from fire risks while supporting sustainable land use. Insights from these burns will help improve wildfire resilience and public safety. Stay tuned for updates as conditions evolve. A great day discussing all aspects of land use and the new technologies available today to enhance environmental monitoring and environmental management across a range of land uses. Very excited about this long term project and working with some great people
Pakuratahi Land Use Study v2 Field visit. Folks from Scion, Maungaharuru Tangitū Trust, Ngāti Pāhauwera Development Trust, MfE, MPI, HBRC, Pan Pac, HB Forestry Group, Polytechnik biomass and RedAxe Forest Intel onsite. Here to see this comparative study of production forest, sheep and beef and native forest underway in HB. Todays tools including LIDAR, eDNA, GIS, UAVs, ISSCOs and electric fishing are being applied to analyse impacts of land use, and create templates for comparing land use systems across terrain types. Special thanks to Dr Tim Payn Research Lead from Scion, Dr Andy Hicks from MfE, Dr Kurt Barichievy from HBRC and Dan Fake from Pan Pac, and guests for your expert words today. This landmark study is only possible because of your collaboration and commitment. New Paper! ?? Trees and water: A survey of the perception and decisions of landowners in New Zealand. This is the 15th published paper from the Forest Flows programme. Click the link for the paper: https://lnkd.in/gD27Q7Cw This research, led by Scion's Grace Villamor, surveyed the rural communities in 3 regions of New Zealand Aotearoa to understand what they thought about the connection of trees and freshwater. Although this information is important for water allocation decisions, such detailed information is rarely collected. It revealed new insights why rural landowners planted trees, their concerns and perceptions and the complexities. Importantly, views and concerns varied by region. Some overall trends include: 1. Landowners chose to have trees on their farms for a variety of reasons, including increasing biodiversity, mitigating soil erosion, shelterbelts, livestock shade and improving water quality. 2. Landowners are concerned about climate change-induced droughts and the decline in water quality.? 3. Mixed perceptions regarding trees' impact on water quantity, but they generally viewed trees positively for improving water quality.? 4. Drought and flood were identified as significant risks, with lifestyle block owners?(lifestylers) perceiving a higher likelihood of these impacts than farmers. The paper co-authors are Meine van Noordwijk, M Srinivasan, Peter Clinton and Dean Meason The Forest Flows Endeavour Research Programme funded by MBIE Science and Innovation. ?? New Research: Myrtle Rust Threat to NZ's Native Species ?? ? New research shows that the South American Eucalyptus biotype of myrtle rust poses a biosecurity threat to Aotearoa NZ’s myrtle species, including pōhutukawa, mānuka, kānuka, and rawiri mānuka. While some species were more resistant, others—especially pōhutukawa—had greater susceptibility. ? These findings raise concerns about the potential for different biotypes to mix and evolve if they invade Aotearoa, reinforcing the need for improved diagnostics and stronger biosecurity measures to protect Aotearoa NZ’s taonga species. ?
