  • This month's edition of The Evidence Base takes a look at a first-of-a kind study of changes that occur in the maternal brain during pregnancy. Further investigations will provide additional data to support this important piece of research, and hopefully discover the driving mechanisms for the observed changes in this unique, single sample study. #Pregnancy #BrainHealth #BrainScience #Neurology #Epilepsy #MultipleSclerosis

  • Today is EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY and we want to profile our brilliant project manager, Mildred Foo, who recently celebrated 3 years with Scientific Writers Ltd. She’s been amazing at developing our internal processes and is now firmly established as the go-to person for clients and contractors alike. It’s hard to believe it’s been 3 years already and we hope you’ll be with us for many more, Mildred. Thank you so much for all that you do for this small business. Promising initial results for this new treatment for patients with aplastic anaemia. Right now, there are only 2 standard first-line treatments. 1. Immuno-suppressive therapy 2. Stem cell transplant My dad was too old for option 2 (he was 66), and option 1 left him with an infection he never recovered from. I hope the TIARA trial and the pioneering research into Tregs continues to yield positive results, to bring hope and extended lives to everyone living with this rare disease. With support from The Aplastic Anaemia Trust, LifeArc and King's Health Partners Haematology, I hope the team at King's College London have all the resources they need to proceed with Phase 2 next year. Good luck! #RareDiseases #Research #PublicHealth #BloodDisorders #ClinicalTrials https://lnkd.in/ggV_U5bR

Over the last two years, I've been on a journey to find which AI tools best suit my work as a scientific writer. Some are useful, some not so much, and I don't profess to be an expert. I've watched the AI revolution in my industry with keen interest, and it's hard to keep up. The use of AI in medical education seems to be particularly fraught with ethical issues surrounding data privacy. There are also technical and financial barriers to implementation, to say nothing of the risks to critical thinking. But our future healers must be AI literate without compromising ethics and clinical rigour, so what’s the short-term answer? Here's my two pennies' worth. 1. Check your collaborator’s credentials and expertise when using AI tools to create content, whether that material is educational, for marketing purposes, or even helping with sections of a grant application. 2. A lack of scientific knowledge to understand the output from a misguided or ill-informed prompt is where much of the problems lie. I've now witnessed some genuinely awful and inaccurate content being created in the name of 'saving time', and understandably 'money'. But how much of these factors does it save if the work needs to be redone? By the time any technical translations are discovered to be inaccurate, it may already be too late. So, over the past 2 years, if one thing stands out for me, it's this - we need to be informed users, not passive consumers, if AI-generated output in our field is to be of educational AND economic value. #LifelongLearning #AI #MedicalEducation #ScientificWriting

When I write medical education content, I don’t think about the learning outcomes first. ?? Just as you wouldn’t write the abstract of an academic paper first. You’d wait until the full draft was complete. I take a similar approach to writing learning outcomes for educational programmes I'm asked to collaborate on. The first thing I do is learn about the main training topic and work on a detailed outline plan taking the method of delivery into consideration (online, F2F workshop?) I then consider which skills and activities a learner will have once they complete the training. To write effective learning outcomes, I know I need to avoid jargon, avoid listing too many points, and most of all I need to use action verbs and be specific. Because writing learning outcomes isn’t simply an exercise in making lists. ?? It’s a considered and thoughtful process. One that aligns the training content with what a learner can expect to know and implement on completion. If you are writing learning outcomes, use Bloom’s taxonomy if you don’t already. But don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s a checklist. Use it to help you create real and measurable tasks for learners to demonstrate in practice. #MedicalEducation #Education #LearningOutcomes #Teaching #ContentCreation #CME

  • We use Bloom’s taxonomy to design learning objectives when we write content for education activities. Bloom’s taxonomy is a classification of higher order thinking skills. For training materials to be effective, you need to differentiate between cognitive skill levels and that's why we use this proven method when we work with our clients. WHAT EXACTLY IS A LEARNING OBJECTIVE? It's a brief statement which clearly states what the learner will know, or be able to implement, once they complete the training. The statement begins with a measurable verb (e.g., analyse, evaluate, create), followed by the description of some action the learner can expect to carry out. 2 examples ?? Learning objective 1: Understand how to use this medical device ... ? Learning objective 1: Demonstrate the use of this medical device ... ? You must describe the skills and abilities learners need to show and the word 'understand' is difficult to measure. So avoid vague words and phrases. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Learning objectives that require higher levels of cognitive skills lead to deeper learning. And deeper learning improves how knowledge and skills are transferred into practical application. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are scientists who write, and we're here to support you with training materials for all your medical and veterinary education activities. If you have 2 seconds to send a quick DM, you'll get a quick (human) reply. ?
