Health insurtech startups are on the constant lookout for emerging digital opportunities in the domain. Recently, a digital-first ? behavior-based insurance (BBI) model grabbed the attention of several of my insurtech clients. Here’s why: ? My colleagues at ScienceSoft predict that by 2035, at least 60% of health payers will offer some form of BBI – compared to nearly zero in 2024. ? The growing demand for BBI tools in the future means lucrative market opportunities for startups. ? There are currently no BBI software products on the market, so everyone still has a chance to pioneer the niche and maximize its market share. So, what solutions can form the core of your offer? ~1~ Behavior data consolidation platforms Your solution must be able to capture and consolidate disparate data from fitness and health tracking apps, wearables, and – later on – connected medical devices (once there is sufficient demand). Insurers are likely to welcome such software, as it would free them from the hassle of partnering directly with app and device providers. ~2~ AI-powered health risk analytics software You can use deep learning algorithms to build a predictive engine for accurate health risk forecasting based on insureds’ real-time behavioral data. To offer higher value to insurers, add a prescriptive module that can introduce AI-supported guidance for underwriters on risk-driven premium adjustments. ~3~ Incentive management platforms Based on my observations, most health payers prioritize secure collaborative features, as they plan to involve healthcare providers in health program planning and risk assessments. So, your platform should enable secure multi-party access and ePHI exchange. ~4~ Mobile apps for BBI customers Insureds need a convenient tool to track health incentives, health and fitness metrics, and premiums. Your white-label mobile app designed specifically for BBI can attract payers who want to launch their client-side solutions quickly and cost-effectively. Now, when is the best time to enter the niche? Ideally, you should present your solutions on the market ? in 2025–2028 to reach BBI payers before the active planning stage. Established products foster more trust, so it’s already time to get the ball rolling. ? As a startup, you might ?? partner with a mature insurance software product company to swiftly access a large customer base in exchange for expanding your partner’s offer with innovative BBI tools. I’ve already come across some successful moves, like partnerships between binah.ai and Sapiens and between Wellx and INSTANDA Summing up, if you want to reap the early-comer benefits in the health BBI tech space, ?? don’t wait too long and focus on the demanded tools to secure quick payback. Can you effectively manage physical therapy online? As a clinician, I understand personally the challenges of guiding a patient through their rehabilitation journey at home. There is always a risk that they will miss, forget, or misinterpret your instructions. One of our clients, AKLOS Health, shared the sentiment and wanted to improve the at-home rehabilitation process. Having own experience of using multiple digital exercise therapy platforms with little effect, the client was inspired to design his own solution that combined online tools with offline musculoskeletal physiotherapy to enhance the rehab experience. Here’s how it works: ???? Start with an in-person assessment. A physical therapist evaluates the patient’s condition and designs a custom treatment plan accessible to the patient in a dedicated app. ?? Move the rehabilitation journey online. The app contains exercise videos with detailed instructions on musculoskeletal therapy. When exercising, patients use Xsens DOT wearable sensors, which track the range of motion of their joints and give real-time feedback (e.g., warning a patient about incorrect posture). The sensor readings are then compared against the patient’s previous results and the target set by the therapist. ?? Adjust the physiotherapy plan according to recent patient data. Back at the clinic, the physiotherapist can look for asymmetries and compensatory movements in the patient’s data, track their joint range of motion, and prescribe a more effective exercise program accordingly. For the patient, this means less pain, faster recovery, and lower chances of injury when exercising. ???How we made general-purpose motion sensors work better for physiotherapy? When engineering the solution, the team found that the out-of-the-box motion capture algorithms for the selected sensors didn’t provide sufficient accuracy to measure knee joints and low back mobility. Our developers ended up engineering proprietary algorithms specifically for physical rehabilitation exercises. ??The result? 70% reduction in pain and unnecessary surgeries for users of the platform. 52% reduction in medication consumption among the platform users.
