Check out this article in pre-print on a study from OHT and Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani’s Data Sciences in Global Health PhD candidates Danny Muzata, A Shivram, and colleagues, which explores how the malaria parasite, ???????????????????? ????????????????????, adapts to resist antifolate drugs used in treatment. Our ability to cure malaria infections is constantly under threat due to drug resistance. This study reveals how ??. ???????????????????? adapts by altering a key enzyme targeted by antifolate drugs. The team identified enzyme regions essential for stability and pinpointed mutations that help the parasite survive. They also developed a model to predict how this enzyme changes under drug pressure, mapping the pathways the parasite follows to develop resistance. Ruizhi Pan and I used 2024 Nobel Physics Laureate Geoffrey Hinton's work in a Physical Review Research paper on quantum spin systems published May 2024. An accessible summary of this work by Joint Quantum Institute science writer Bailey Bedford can be found at https://lnkd.in/esfAvV5f Our work found that Hinton's Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) Gerhard Fasol could efficiently solve a new class of one-dimensional quantum spin systems. This was no transformational breakthrough, but it showed that new mathematical machine learning techniques can expand the scope of physics modeling, as recognized by the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.
