Want to help the chemicals sector to decarbonize and prevent the worst effects of climate change? The SBTi is again inviting feedback to inform our Chemicals Sector Criteria for setting 1.5°C-aligned science-based targets. We’re seeking expert input to shape the next phase of the criteria development, including pilot testing and final release. ?? Stakeholders across the chemicals industry, finance, academia and civil society are asked to participate in this consultation, running from November 12 to Jan 10, 2025. We look forward to hearing from a diverse range of voices. ?? Science Based Targets initiative

Enabling organizations to take swift climate action by setting ambitious emissions reduction targets.
关于我们
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. We develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at latest. The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary which will host our target validation services. Our partners are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

"It's important when companies make pledges that they're not self-declared and self-monitored. They need to be credible and they need to be accountable. “And that's why we work with the Science Based Targets initiative, that provides a credible, verifiable, science-based pathway, so we can be sure that companies are making progress. “Why is this important? We have found that companies that use science-based targets to decarbonize do so twice as fast as others, so we know that it works. About 6,000 companies are using this methodology." ?? We love to see leaders like United Nations Global Compact CEO and Executive Director Sanda Ojiambo championing the value of science-based targets in the fight against climate change. By setting science-based targets, companies are committing to real, measurable progress toward a net-zero future. #Sciencebasedtargets #COP29 #ClimateAction
Our CEO and Executive Director, Sanda Ojiambo, joined CGTN Europe to discuss the urgent need for private sector climate action. The conversation emphasized the critical role of setting and achieving targets with the Science Based Targets initiative, committing to decarbonization and implementing tangible changes to meet climate goals. Without private sector engagement, we cannot realize Nationally Determined Contributions #NDCs and secure a sustainable future. Governments are setting the ambition and frameworks—now, it’s time for businesses to lead with action. Watch the interview here: https://lnkd.in/ezNz4hPN

Live from #COP29 in Baku: Key Moments and Insights Reflecting on her conversations so far with conference delegates, SBTi Chief Impact Officer Tracy Wyman shares her insights from this year’s global discussion on urgent climate action: ? Global Economic Overhaul Needed: As António Guterres warned, 2024 is a critical year for climate action. We need transformative change across economies, not just piecemeal efforts. ? Accountable Climate Finance: Transparent and responsible investment is key to achieving the systemic change needed for a net-zero future. ? Collaboration for Progress: From climate standards to carbon markets, collaboration and shared responsibility will be essential to moving forward. ?? Watch Tracy’s video below and stay tuned for more updates from the ground in Baku, as we look to supercharge businesses’ climate action. #SBTi #ClimateAction #NetZero #ClimateLeadership?
#COP29 Update: Key Takeaways from Baku We’re only a few days into the conference, but already there are some powerful conversations shaping the future of climate action. Here are a few key themes emerging from my discussions: A Climate Crisis in Real Time: As @AntonioGuterres warned, 2024 is proving to be a "masterclass in climate destruction." It’s clear—we need a global economic overhaul, not just piecemeal solutions, to secure a livable future for all. Finance as the Catalyst: The spotlight is on climate finance—and it’s all about transparency and accountability. Proper investment is crucial to driving the systemic change we need across all sectors. Collaboration is Key: Yesterday, I hosted a panel on the future of climate standards, and the one theme that kept coming up was collaboration. We need to share knowledge, celebrate progress, and hold each other accountable if we’re going to move forward. Looking Ahead: The rest of COP29 will tackle key issues including finance, health, and food security—critical topics that intersect with climate action. I’m excited to continue these important conversations and explore how science-based targets can guide us toward real solutions. ?? Watch the video below for more insights and stay tuned for ongoing updates from the SBTi here in Baku! #SBTi #ClimateAction #NetZero #ClimateLeadership

SBTi Chief Technical Officer Alberto Carrillo Pineda is on the ground at #COP29 in Azerbaijan, joining peers from across the globe to continue defining the path forward towards 1.5°C. In this video, Alberto reflects on progress in the 10 years since the UN Climate Change formally recognized the role of non-state actors in tackling global heating. To take part in the discussions at COP today with Alberto and SBTi colleagues Tracy Wyman and Francesco Starace - along with Margherita Barbieri of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Pankaj Bhatia of Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and Emily Faint of the BSI - join our event in Area/Zone E, G28, Blue Zone at 4.30pm AZT. As #COP29?kicked off in Baku, it's important to recognise the progress made over the last decade. Ten years ago at COP20, The UN Climate Change began formally recognising the crucial role of non-state actors in the climate fight. This helped establish an important bridge between the multilateral process and the real economy, setting the basis for the Global Climate Action Agenda that has contributed significantly to accelerating climate action by non-state actors. As an example of this, today,?nearly 10,000 companies?have committed to #ScienceBasedTargets with the Science Based Targets initiative, making corporate climate ambition a global movement. But the work is far from done.?Despite these gains, we are still facing urgent climate challenges. The reality is that to stay on track for 1.5°C, we need?much faster action—from everyone in our ecosystem. I’m looking forward to connecting with peers and colleagues from across the world at this year’s climate COP - exchanging insights and ideas on where next and the impact we can make. Watch my initial reflections on the video below, and stay tuned for more updates from myself and SBTi colleagues. ?#ClimateAction #NetZero #Sustainability #ClimateLeadership #ScienceBasedTargets #COP29

“It is absolutely essential to act now. It’s absolutely essential to reduce emissions drastically now” As #COP29 begins, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for immediate action in the face of the devastating effects of climate change. As global leaders gather to work on climate solutions in Baku, we urge companies to heed Mr. Guterres’ call and set ambitious emissions reduction targets today. https://lnkd.in/drMi3Kdv And if you are in Baku this week, join us on November 12 to explore the evolving role of climate standards in enabling corporate climate action with our expert panel - find out more here: https://lnkd.in/ekaFa7xc #COP29 #sciencebasedtargets #netzero
