?? Breaking new ground in corporate sustainability! Today at #COP16Colombia, we announce that the first-ever science-based targets for both freshwater and land have been adopted by trailblazing companies. ?? ??? The first-ever science-based targets for both freshwater and land have been adopted by global luxury group Kering. ?? Global biopharma company GSK and building materials company Holcim have adopted the first science-based targets for freshwater. The announcement comes following the conclusion of our year-long corporate pilot program, with the majority of participating companies receiving validation for some or all targets. This positive milestone comes as world and business leaders gather at COP16 in Colombia, where urgent action to preserve biodiversity and stop the destruction of nature have been at the heart of negotiations. ?? SBTN’s Executive Director Erin Billman said: “Our corporate pilot has shown that science-based targets for nature are both feasible and valuable, closing a critical gap in corporate sustainability. We’re pleased to see Kering, GSK and Holcim lead the way by publicly adopting the world’s first science-based targets beyond climate; demonstrating that a clear and credible pathway for ambitious action for nature is possible. The time for companies to act is now — responsibly, urgently, and with the ambition that matches the scale of the challenge.” Science-based targets for nature are a key mechanism for companies to deliver on the Global Biodiversity Framework. Aiming directly at the drivers and pressures of nature loss, science-based targets for nature will tell a company if they are taking enough of the right actions, in the right places, at the right time in order to do their part to reverse and halt nature loss by 2030. These much needed targets on nature build on and complement existing corporate targets on climate. ???? This is just the beginning. We are pleased to see these trailblazing companies leading the way, and we look forward to seeing more companies follow suit in the months ahead. ?? ?? Read more: https://lnkd.in/eTMakv4e ?? "As we approach the close of another eventful year, global momentum for nature faces undeniable headwinds. COP16 underscored the gap between ambition and action, with most governments yet to outline concrete plans to meet their targets, and critical issues like financing remaining unresolved. Similarly at COP29 - the climate COP - governments are faltering in advancing the actions needed to stay within the 1.5C warming limit. "These challenges erode the bold commitments and clear signals necessary to tackle pressing global dynamics, including the incoming U.S. government and ongoing geopolitical tensions. [..] As we prepare to engage at the upcoming UNCCD COP16 and Davos, our resolve remains steadfast: turning ambition into sufficient action for a nature positive future." - Read more from Erin Billman, Executive Director, the SBTN in our latest monthly newsletter ???

? SBTN framework is now ‘sufficiently mature’ to guide corporate nature targets, reports WWF. "The time for hesitation has passed and there is no longer any excuse for inaction." Read more. ?? In a new report which includes recommendations to assess the credibility of corporate nature targets in the EU, WWF analyzes the #SBTN’s alignment with obligations under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) – and concludes that the initiative’s guidance “can greatly facilitate the implementation of nature targets and their related reporting requirements by CSRD”. “Companies must take immediate and decisive action to set comprehensive nature targets, as the methodologies and frameworks are now sufficiently mature to guide this process. The time for hesitation has passed and there is no longer any excuse for inaction. This report examines how companies, auditors, and supervisors must ensure the credibility of nature objectives as the cornerstone of a robust transition plan,” said Antoine Pugliese, Head of Sustainable Finance at WWF-France. The report concludes that the SBTN currently represents "the gold standard in target setting methodology and provides a solid basis for complying with all CSRD and related ESRS requirements related to nature target reporting, sometimes going beyond these regulatory expectations.” ?? ?? As #COP29 commences this week, policymakers must unlock finance for #Nature. ???? Last month, more than 3,000 companies and investors represented at the #Biodiversity talks at #COP16Colombia, triple the number that attended Montreal in 2022. In a recent article for Reuters, Angeli Mehta PhD explores that whilst there were some wins at COP16, there's still progress to be made. With input from various individuals including our CEO Eva Zabey, the article highlights that: ?? Whilst over 150 companies are preparing to set science-based targets for nature with Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), the World Benchmarking Alliance reports that only 5% of companies have assessed the impact of their operations on nature, and fewer than 1% of companies know how much their operations depend on nature. ?? The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) announced that over 500 companies and financial institutions had signed up to adopt its recommendations on reporting nature-related impacts and risks. Whilst there's still a big gap between leading companies and others, policymakers can level the playing field to make valuing nature the new normal. ?? Whilst environmentally harmful subsidies are now higher on the business agenda, judging by discussions that were held on the fringes of COP16, policy is needed to drive action. "The first thing both governments and businesses need to do is to identify and map out which subsidies they benefit from, and then we need to be very clear on what the alternatives could be, so that it's not just turning off the tap." - Eva Zabey, CEO, Business for Nature ??
