Nancy L. Staus, Julie Risien & Holly Cho explored scientists' perceptions of relationship-based science communication, focusing on the STEM Ambassador Program (STEMAP). They found that learner-centered strategies foster trust and engagement with underrepresented audiences, emphasising the importance of shared values and dialogue over knowledge transmission. So not just the science deficit model of communication but a two-way exchange. This might be useful for folks interested in meaningful public outreach. Job search is a time & energy consuming process. It would require 6,000 ATP molecules/minute if it were a biochemical process. ? We are scientists, we like efficiency. We can make our job search more efficient by: ? -??Avoiding random “cold” applications. -??Taking time to reflect on our personal strengths & career goals. -??Creating a tailored strategy based on self-assessment & data. ? Self-assessment is key. However, even though scientists are inherently investigators, the one thing we often struggle to investigate is ourselves. ? Here’s my self-assessment tip: Start from the big picture by asking yourself 2 questions: ? -??What do I want from my life and career in 6 months? -??And in 3 years? ? Then, dive deeper into the basics: ? -??What do I enjoy doing? -??Why do I enjoy that? -??What gives me energy and what drains me? -??What am I good at? -??What can I improve? ???? ? Consider doing a perception exercise: It’s essential to spot where your own perception aligns with that of others. You have a long list of tasks in your daily postdoc life to choose from—mark them on a 1-10 scale. Be honest with yourself and take a look at the results: which ones score ≥8? ? Whether you enjoy or hate bench work, delivering a presentation in front of a live audience, or supervising junior students, all of this is valuable information that you can use to your benefit (aka your precious data). ? There’s no right or wrong career path —there’s only the one that fits you best: based on your self-assessment and data, you can adopt personalized, targeted strategies to optimize your job search. ?
