This past week, members of our staff and board traveled to Washington D.C., to participate in the annual Humanities on the Hill advocacy event. #SCHumanities is grateful to our Senators, Representatives, and their staff members for meeting with us to learn more about our impact in each district. We're always proud to tell our story, share about the great work we're doing in South Carolina, and see colleagues on the hill. We even got the chance to see two of our Congressmen this visit! Huge thanks to Congressman Clyburn and Congressman Wilson for taking some time to chat with us. Thank you to the Federation of State Humanities Councils for organizing this event and the National Endowment for the Humanities for its support and partnership! #HumanitiesontheHill #washingtondc #HumanitiesforAll??

关于我们
SC Humanities’ mission is to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of all South Carolinians. Established in 1973, this 501(c) 3 organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of community leaders from throughout the state. It presents and/or supports literary initiatives, lectures, exhibits, festivals, publications, oral history projects, videos and other humanities-based experiences that directly or indirectly reach more than 250,000 citizens annually. Humanities disciplines include history, literature, folklore, philosophy, comparative religion, archaeology, African American studies, Southern studies, linguistics, ethics, jurisprudence, political science, anthropology, international studies, art theory and criticism and Women’s Studies. Our programs and activities take place in town halls, small and large museums, libraries, schools, colleges and universities—any place that people come together to share, to learn and to have enlightening conversations about our world and our place in it. Our programs explore the rich heritage of our state and its links to the cultural traditions of our nation and world. SC Humanities serves as a politically neutral convener for a wide-ranging, diverse number of groups. We make connections and offer technical assistance to prospective grantees and project coordinators every day. SC Humanities is an excellent resource and frequently provides advice, referrals and mentoring (at no charge). We are a small organization, but we accomplish big things through and with our partners throughout South Carolina. We help to build communities and move South Carolina forward as a state. SC Humanities reaches many rural areas, increasing the cultural capacity of local institutions and providing local economic impact. Won’t you join us in this endeavor?

First board meeting of 2025: Georgetown SC! The third oldest city in South Carolina and "where southern time meets maritime." We explored the history and museums of Georgetown including The South Carolina Maritime Museum. Yes, they love their goats! Despite the chilly weather, a great board meeting dedicated to grant approvals for more programs, welcoming new board members, and strategic planning. Huge thanks to our board member, Brendon Barber for hosting us and we surprised him with a birthday cake! If Georgetown is not on your list of cities to visit in SC....it should be! #SCHumanities #boardmeeting #georgetownsc #scmaritimemuseum #southerncharm #maritime #goatisland

Last week, #SCHumanities traveled to Providence, RI to represent at the 2024 National Humanities Conference. It was a great week for staff and board members of attending interesting sessions, networking with other council members, and exploring the city of Providence. Major highlights included a South Carolina dinner with our friends and partners at Coastal Carolina University, Clemson University, and University of South Carolina Upstate. A magnificent address from NEH Chair Shelley Lowe and a special surprise for our very own Randy Akers at the annual business meeting where a resolution was read and put in the minutes in honor of his 40 plus years of service to the humanities. Thanks to Rhode Island Council for the Humanities for hosting us! And thanks to National Endowment for the Humanities and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. #HumanitiesforAll #NHC2024 #ProvidenceRI
