I bought toothbrush heads at Sam's Club yesterday and the cashier asked me if I wanted the protection package for them. ?? I stared at him for a moment. He looked at the screen, then back at me and I said no thank you. The fact that the cashier didn't think it was strange to ask how worried I was about a defective toothbrush head made me wonder if the warranty game is a little long in the tooth. I understand back in the day asking if you want protection on that $30 Blu-Ray DVD you just bought. I understand protection on the $199 LOL Surprise Winter Disco Chalet (for my daughter). Those make sense. But a $50 10-pack of toothbrush heads?!?! Like every computer business we also offer extended warranties on the equipment we sell. Some people buy them and some do not. Its hard to get a person who NEVER buys the warranty to decide to purchase one. After all, some actuary somewhere made a calculation on the likelihood that you will need it. You might get better odds in Vegas honestly. Schrock is a service company and its hard to brag about your service if your equipment is breaking down and costing your customers to repair it. So we avoided the actuary and created a warranty system that delivers award-winning service. If you buy a warranty and you need it, you are very glad you have it. If you buy a warranty and end up not needing it, we automatically refund the purchase price of the warranty. Its simple, it removes all financial risk for the customer, and ensures a better service experience no matter what happens in the future. Almost all of our customers love it, but we still have a few that will never buy the warranty no matter what we do, and that's OK. I kind of wish I would have asked how much the protection plan was on those toothbrush heads though. I'm just curious.

President at Schrock Innovations - Voted Midwest's Best IT Services

Choose Your Own Adventure Question: Assume you have an amazing system and offer that consistently gains customers. You want to scale. Which option do you choose? 1) You hire sales people to network and gain customers at a pace of at least 7 new clients a month valued at $4,620 each. You risk slower growth as you find the right sales person fit, and consistent acquisition is not guaranteed. 2) You spend $1M+ to acquire a competitor who charges more than you and provides a lower quality of service. You add 96 clients instantly at an annual value over $500,000. It will take ~3-4 years under ideal circumstances (4-5 under likely circumstances) to B/E. Which path leads to the highest growth potential in your opinion?
