Excited to announce that teachers will be able to turn on Desmos graphing calculator in SchoolJoy Quest starting this Friday, Aug 30th. Looking forward to gathering more feedback from teachers and students so we can continue to improve the fidelity and efficacy of the learning experience. Many thanks to the Desmos team for the wonderful support and collaboration.

We will begin to share more highlights from our system in the coming months, starting with a cool tool we call SchoolJoy TA that combines the power of LLMs with learner data. We are COPPA, FERPA, and SOC 2 Type 1 Certified so your students' data is absolutely secure and never used to inform or train any models. More to come!

How can districts more efficiently and sustainably operationalize Portrait of a Learner and create a consistent understanding of every competency across grade levels and stakeholder groups? There are countless opportunities for students to exhibit, develop, and demonstrate proficiency/progress in a given competency, how can districts capture it all? If we used AI as a reasoning engine instead of a generative engine, then we could unlock more use cases for districts beyond the generation of learning resources. AI is great at understanding context and nuance. SchoolJoy captures all of the necessary contexts, from skills definitions to learner experiences, and utilizes AI to automatically recommend skills based on the student's activities and inputs. This will give teachers more time to focus on teaching and coaching students on the key competencies, instead of documenting and classifying every experience.

Amazing insights into the diligence and art of standards breakdown.

This post gets a bit technical but I truly love this work. It's a glimpse into the science of learning and I feel like I'm getting a new crash course every single day. If you are NOT in the education sector, here's the takeaway: there's great work being done by great people and with AI we can finally scale what works with less. More importantly, we need to believe that our students are capable of achieving more than what we give them credit for. Here's the incredible Kelly Stukus from ESC of Northeast Ohio speaking to the genesis of the Clarity framework, which led to an 100% improvement in some subgroups at the high school that first launched this initiative. Memorializing success criteria so we can visualize what success looks like for every kid is crucial, and note that this work can only take place *after* the review of data. Data by itself isn't the full picture, but it's crucial to the start of the journey. Another implication is that because this work is dependent on the data, the breakdown of the standard is actually dynamic (data changes every year). It's quite cumbersome to do this every single year for every prioritized standard based on test results (thoughts on testing/assessments is a separate convo, so bear with me here). In this context, how can we expect the curriculum to always adapt to the intent and needs of the district and the individual student...the answer is it doesn't. It's a moving target every single year, or at least it should be. We need personalized and dynamic curriculum. I'm intentionally leaving out screenshots of SchoolJoy because at this stage of the conversation it's not about the technology. We need to set the right target first before we add fuel to the fire, otherwise we may be inadvertently using technology to scale something that is not productive, or worse counter-productive to the cause.
