关于我们
What School Could Be is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a robust collection of resources for educators interested in innovative practices and placing students at the center of their learning. Educators have endured endless top-down edicts that they have no voice in and don’t believe in. We believe in educators— in their power to take small steps that lead to big change. We support educators in their journey through our online community of tens of thousands of members, providing free professional development resources including courses, events, our Innovation Playlist, coaching, and connection to educators involved in this work all over the world. We also partner with others to provide micro-credentialing, an affordable Master’s degree program, and bespoke coaching services for schools and districts that are leading for change.

Our latest publication in the What School Could Be Chronicle tackles the importance of being active in one’s community. A concept that seems more important than ever these days. As the world becomes more and more siloed and neighborhoods become more and more divided, the concept of a village and modeling community is essential. A big thank you to Charity Marcella Moran, Ed.S. for writing this piece and to?Jennifer D. Klein?for editing it. Find a full link to the WSCB Chronicle in comments. ?? Imagine giving yourself, your leadership team, and your students real time to tinker with ideas. With no fear of failure, no assessments or grades, just to tinker with innovation and creating. Melanie Ching talks about how she does this and about so many other exemplary ways to lead. Including tearing down a wall so that two teachers could convert their classrooms into one to facilitate team teaching. During the course of the 1999-2000 school year, two groups of high school students, one from Holcomb, Missouri population 531 and the other from New York City population 10,000,000, worked together to create a mural about their perceptions of one another and the communities they lived in. ? Join us as project creators Dave Loewenstein and Sandra Stein, along with two students who participated in the mural project 24 years ago, share their insights.

The impact of #RomanKrznaric continues to spread worldwide. Josh Reppun's recent What School Could Be Podcast conversation with Roman isn't the only place people are being transformed by the concept of being a "Good Ancestor" and the dire need to shift from short-term to long-term thinking. Our friend, Raya Bidshahri, also just published an article addressing the real negative impact that short-term thinking has on the schooling "system" and it's struggle to adapt to the realities of today. She writes: "This short-termism is particularly concerning given that real, meaningful impact and change in education take time. We often don’t see the impact of radically different curricula for years, making it challenging to justify immediate investments and changes. The long-term nature of educational outcomes means that reforms and innovations may not bear fruit within the typical political or fiscal cycles, causing reluctance among policymakers and administrators to adopt new approaches." (link to her full article here: https://lnkd.in/gZWJd9vp) This short clip from Josh Reppun's podcast episode with Roman, highlights a concrete way to start building more "long-term thinking" into education spaces using the tradition of an "empty chair."

Letting learners lead. More of this please! A shoutout to Santa Ana Unified School District for giving students the space to lead adult conversations. Imagine what this young man got out of his experience standing in front of a room full of adults actually listening to him. If you haven’t joined one of our “Eye on Student Protagonism” Events - check it out. We led students lead the conversations every month.
From Learner to Leader: A Full-Circle Moment When a Valley High School student joins our classroom walkthroughs at Diamond Elementary and ends up leading the conversation—now that’s a full-circle moment! Watching him share his insights with parents, pointing out what impressed him most, was a reminder that learning isn’t just about what happens in the classroom—it’s about what sticks with you. Love seeing our students not just learning, but leading! #WEareSAUSD #SAUSDBetterTogether #SAUSDGraduateProfile
