?? Superintendent Snapshot, Part 3! ?? Dr. Walter B. Gonsoulin, Jr. at Jefferson County Schools (JEFCOED) Alabama says that a working relationship between district leadership and transportation departments is a vital part of the school system. ??“We run over 450 routes every single day. This is a massive operation. I have to have my pulse on what is happening with that department and have good people running it. If it’s not running well, and students aren’t getting to where they need to be and on time, that is going to cause a ripple effect throughout the instructional day.” Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/e7AfMdYc ?? Wendy's story highlights the vital importance of making sure transportation is in constant communication with school district leadership and the benefits of staying informed about the needs/concerns of school bus drivers (In Wendy's case, by becoming a driver herself!) Wendy Moore is the long-time superintendent of the GENESEE JOINT SCHOOL DISTRICT 282. In 2022, at the urging of the Genesee Transportation Director Jeff Williams, Superintendent Moore got her commercial driver’s license so she could help solve a school bus driver shortage and hopefully inspire others to follow her lead. While Moore said she never had the desire to drive a school bus, she loves it. “...sometimes it’s just the conversations that you can have,” Moore said, adding that the district transports on average 60 students across four daily routes and 180 square miles. “We live in a very rural area, so some of my best routes are quite a way outside of town. You may have just one or two students on the bus for the last 10 to 15 minutes of the route, and they just want to talk to you. You can talk about their day and see their dog when you drop them off that they’re always talking about, and it gives you more of a personal connection.” ??
