Since our founding, we have reached more than 50 countries. While the scope of our work in those countries has expanded and changed over the years, our commitment to improving the lives and learning of children has not. In June, the USAID Assistant Administrator for Africa, Dr. Monde Muyangwa, visited the USAID Transforming Teacher Education Activity (TTE) to observe a student teacher giving a grade three literacy lesson at St. Lawrence Primary School. The administrator was impressed with the lesson in the Chinyanja language and met with the school administration. The headteacher shared that the school has benefited from ZAMISE student teachers who introduced new teaching methods, resulting in improved literacy among learners. Following the school visit, Dr. Muyangwa met with ZAMISE officials and discussed their collaboration with TTE. The college's lecturers received training and support from TTE, and the principal mentioned that the approach taken by TTE ensures continuity of the student-centered practices they learned from TTE. Many thanks to Blessings Chisama for sharing his insights from the STEP Activity's study on inclusive education in Malawi. The study revealed a significant need for more comprehensive training and resources for teacher training institutions (TTIs). The STEP Activity will focus on incorporating inclusive learning practices into language and literacy subjects through targeted continuous professional development interventions for TTI educators.
