School to Careers Partnership

Outstanding work being done at BHR to help shape the workforce of tomorrow.

The Center for Advancement of Stem Education (CASE) at Bridgewater State University hosted several students from Randolph High School in an immersive Cybersecurity experience. It was one of the most well put together interactive experiences I have seen delivered in my time with the School to Careers Partnership. Kerrie Carrelas continues to go above and beyond to find experiences for her students to experience the #worldofwork

Crazy busy week last week for the School to Careers Partnership. With several trips going on, we did want to recognize Mike McCarthy and DCL (Design Communications Ltd.) for being amazing partners, and hosting multiple groups from Dedham Public Schools and Holbrook HS. Thanks for all your hard work this year Ashley Mansfield for your commitment to the success of your students.

The School to Careers Partnership worked with the Mass Audubon Society to provide programming to the entire 1st and 4th grade classes at Randolph Public Schools. Exposure to careers at the elementary school level looks very different than at the HS, but it is still just as important to get those inquisitive juices flowing at a young age. In total, more than 400 students were given access to this amazing programming 4th grade: Awesome Owls Students rotate through three stations to investigate nature artifacts and discover the adaptations that make owls unique from other birds of prey. Handling owl skulls, talons, and wings help students build their scientific skills of inquiry and gives them the opportunity to make their own hypotheses about which belong to owls and which do not, based on the patterns they observe. Students then meet two live owl ambassadors from the Trailside Museum to be able to observe their traits and ask questions. Students learn about the careers of the educators teaching the program, the scientists that study the animals, and wildlife rehabilitators that care for injured wildlife.

The School to Careers Partnership sent students from Randolph High School to Nichols College to see their experiential learning first hand. Kerrie Carrelas brought students to use VR in the metaverse, to see how business students practice their public speaking and interviewing skills. This is just a small step forward in the partnership we are building with Nichols, and we are so grateful for our higher ed partners. #hornsdown

Congratulations to the winners of the Pack Challenge. All the students and their projects were amazing. I can’t wait to get to work with PMMI: The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies and Sam Goldberg to roll this incredible opportunity out to the Vocational, and Innovation Pathways schools in Massachusetts. ??We had an incredible week hosting students from multiple schools in Massachusetts at our manufacturing plant for a hands-on tour of our facility! It's always inspiring to see young minds eager to learn about the packaging industry. ?Providing students with insights into modern manufacturing is something we’re passionate about, giving them a glimpse into the cutting-edge technology, teamwork, and problem-solving that drive our operations. It’s rewarding to share how we bring ideas to life and, hopefully, spark some interest in future careers in this field. Of the 15 events the School to Careers Partnership has running this week for #STEMWEEK, the two trips to the Cape Cod Canal Visitors Center lucked out the most with perfect late summer weather. Students from Dedham High School and Canton Public Schools met with Park Rangers to learn about the construction, operation and maintenance of the Canal, and the roles that the US Army Corps of Engineers play in it. They also headed down to the beach to learn about the coastal ecology of our region. This trip is always a huge hit, and I appreciate DHS teacher Christine Casali for all she does to help expand the offerings that STC delivers through her network. And special thanks to Ashley Mansfield for all of her hard work coordinating these opportunities.

On October?7th, 15 high school students from Milton Public Schools attended a field trip to Harvard University. The students visited the Putnam Gallery, Collection Of Historical Scientific Instruments, and attended a CS50 lecture on Data Structures by the renowned Professor David J. Malan. At the Museum of Scientific Instruments, students were able to view tools used by Galileo, early telescopes to instruments purchased by Benjamin Franklin. The highlight of the day was the CS50 lecture on Data Structures. Professor Malan made complex concepts accessible to all. Students learned about the fundamental building blocks of computer science and how data structures are used to efficiently store and manipulate information.? Students are grateful for the opportunity to visit Harvard University and explore the fascinating world of science and technology sponsored by?the School to Careers Partnership

The weather may have cancelled our boat trip but we pivoted and had an incredible time touring many of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution laboratories with our educational sponsor, Zephyr. Christine Casali’s students were immersed in hands on marine biology and experiences including the Alvin submersible. They also learned that PHD marine biologists wouldn’t be able to conduct their research without the efforts of welders, riggers, crane operators, metal fabricators, and divers. The School to Careers Partnership is always happy to sponsor these events, removing financial barriers to career and educational exploration.
