The evening of October 5th, 2024, SAR hosted its first ever Chef's Tasting dinner for members with Navajo chef and James Beard Award Finalist, Justin Pioche. Accompanied by the team of his mother and business manager, Janice, and his sister and sous chef, Tia, the five-course meal service and accompanying culinary presentation went off without a hitch. Esteemed guests and Food for Thought speaker, Kathleen Merrigan and her husband, Michael Selmi, were joined by eight others in the president's office and historic dining room of Amelia Elizabeth and Martha White's El Delirio home. Starting with Navajo tea and ending with yellow corn cake, the meal was a progressive journey through Justin's and his people's culinary history. Amid the buoyant conversation, good spirits, warm ambience and historic setting, Justin's culinary aptitude, the quality of his team's service and the richness of his culture shone brightly. The group departed hours later with their bellies full and their hearts content with the knowledge that they'd had the privilege to enjoy an truly unique and unforgettable culinary experience. On October 3, 2024, as part of the membership programming for our Food for Thought Humanities Festival, SAR organized an outing to Reunity Resources and The Kitchen at Plants of the Southwest nursery. A group of 24 of our members gathered for a guided tour of the grounds and operations of the non-profit organization. The group left feeling inspired and humbled by the tireless work of the organization. Through their agricultural practices, farm stand and food hub operations, collaborations with other local nonprofits, city-wide compost program, extensive educational programming and countless donations, they have a direct and profound impact on the local food system and community as a whole. Following the tour, the group made its way down the road to one of the other hidden gems of Santa Fe's sustainable agriculture and local food movement: the semi-secret Plants of the Southwest Kitchen. There they enjoyed the daily, three-course menu offerings prepared by Chef Olive Tyrrell and her colleague Chase. At communal tables they reflected over the morning's events and connected over the incomparable artistry and freshness of the locally grown and handmade salad, tostada, and series of three desserts. Members strolled the grounds of the native plants nursery, as they departed; bellies full, minds inspired and hearts content with a autumn's day well-spent.
