??? Exciting Alumni News! ?? ???? The Netflix adaptation of the book My Life with the Walter Boys by Alex Kalnins (MFHS Class of 2009) was recently listed as the #1 show on Netflix. Kalnins is also a 2019 MFHS Fine Arts Hall of Fame inductee. Kalnins (nee DeWalt) started writing the first draft of her debut novel, My Life With the Walter Boys, when she was 15 years old. She went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis on creative writing. ???? While in college, she began posting the second draft of her book on the Wattpad platform under the pen name Ali Novak. By the time she graduated from UW-Madison in 2013, Alex had found her story had become a viral hit, and she was offered a publishing deal with Sourcebooks Fire. It was then that she decided to pursue writing full-time. My Life With the Walter Boys was released in March 2014. It was nominated in the Best Young Adult Fiction category of the Goodreads Choice Awards and won a YALSA’s Teen Top Ten Reads award in 2015. ?? Since then, the novel has sold more than 100,000 copies and has been optioned for television by Komixx Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television. Alex is married to her high school sweetheart, Jared.
