We equip education advocates and aspiring school board members with the knowledge and network to drive systemic change.
关于我们
Our mission is to activate a diverse coalition of education advocates and aspiring school board members to create significant and sustainable change in their school system. We prepare participants with the skills, mindset, networks, and experiences needed to be ready to serve as effective school board members and education advocates. At School Board School, we: -Prepare participants to lead and govern: Our 6-month program is comprised of 20 sessions and field trip experiences led by content area experts. These experiences provide participants with a deep understanding of how school districts operate and what it takes to make systemic change. -Develop diverse leadership: We are building a network of people who have historically been affected by but not included in this work. We grow their confidence, skills, knowledge and network so that educational leadership at all levels- from community activists to school board members- represents the fullness of our community. -Launch strong coalitions: Individuals can have a positive impact but they don’t change systems; coalitions change systems. Our participants start as a group of individuals considering the independent actions they can take to make change but grow into a coalition of people strengthened by collective and sustained action.

At School Board School, we’ve built one of the most diverse and informed network of education advocates in the country, and our members consistently show up for and support one another. Recently, members from our previous classes joined our current Cincinnati class to help them refine their vision for how they want to impact students in our community. Special thanks to Cincinnati Police Sergeant Deon Mack (Cincinnati 5), School Board School Director of Curriculum & Coaching Elyse Jenkins (Cincinnati 5), Red Wine & Blue Story Producer Jill Jonassen (Cincinnati 3), and Hamilton County ESC Education Consultant Malinda McReynolds (Cincinnati 3). Now more than ever, we know educators and education advocates are critical levers for building equitable spaces, both in and out of the classroom, where every child can thrive. So, during this National Education Week, we want to send a big thank you to the nearly 200 people who have taken part in our learning program in Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Chicago, and are now serving on school boards, crafting policy at City Hall, leading schools and classrooms, speaking at public meetings, providing extracurricular opportunities, and so much more!

Policy can be used to build more equitable school systems, which is why our local school boards are such an important lever for change. We encourage you to attend your school board’s meetings to hear how they discuss policy, and we were excited to attend Cincinnati Public Schools’ Policy Committee meeting with our current Cincinnati class. A big thanks to Cincinnati Public Schools board member, Kendra Mapp (Cincinnati Class 4), for talking with us after the meeting and sharing her insights about how policy helps lay the foundation for new systems. Curious about the difference between a policy and a practice? Want to know who’s in charge of each? Check out this quick overview: https://buff.ly/3Z1Fwf4
