Alicea Hibbard, MHA, chronicles an impactful example of how Indigenous knowledge can help advance scholarship and why it's critical to work with local communities (well worth a read!) ?
During a deadly outbreak in the Four Corners region of the U.S., traditional Navajo knowledge offered crucial insights that modern science alone could not uncover. Our latest article explores the collaboration between public health experts and Navajo communities to identify the mystery virus, offering a powerful reminder of the value in honoring diverse perspectives and integrating traditional wisdom with scientific inquiry. https://lnkd.in/gjZ3RxtM #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #SinNombreVirus #NAHM2025

? Have you heard about journals implementing CRediT (the Contributor Roles Taxonomy), and are you interested in learning more about it? This #JournalTipsTuesday, we're covering a quick overview of how CRediT works and the benefits. Let's get to it! ?? What is CRediT exactly? CRediT, which became a National Information Standards Organization standard in 2022, consists of 14 research contributor roles with three possible degrees of contribution (lead, equal, or supporting). The taxonomy is the first official means of recognizing research contributions beyond writing and editing. By including CRediT details in the attribution section of the body copy and machine-readable metadata of published articles (i.e., JATS XML), journals can increase recognition of and transparency around the various possible forms of research contribution. As noted on the CRediT website, the Taxonomy "roles are not intended to define what constitutes authorship, but instead to capture all the work that allows scholarly publications to be produced." The onus for assigning and confirming CRediT roles rests with corresponding authors. Though, it's up to journals to provide them with guidance and support. ?? What are the benefits of CRediT? For journals and researcher contributors, CRediT facilitates transparency around who's involved in all aspects of research processes in the increasingly collaborative and interconnected scholarly communication ecosystem — from funding acquisition to data curation and everything in between — and it ensures all research contributors get proper credit where due. More specifically, the CRediT Taxonomy helps: ? Editors simplify the process of verifying types/levels of contribution for multi-author papers ? Researchers advance their careers by acknowledging contributions they’ve made that may have previously gone unrecognized ? Editors and researchers reduce the potential for authorship disputes ?? Interested in learning more about implementing CRediT? Metadata in scholarly publishing has evolved far beyond a means for content categorization and discovery. It's now also central to publishing transparency and research integrity. In a recent Council of Science Editors (CSE) article, Madhura S. Amdekar, PhD, Community Engagement Manager at Crossref, discussed how publishers and editors can leverage metadata to promote trust in research. This #JournalTipsTuesday, we're highlighting some key takeaways from her article, which we've linked in the comments. 1?? Combatting misconduct with transparency With issues like paper mills and citation cartels on the rise, including elements such as peer review history and data-sharing agreements in metadata can help journals transparently track and trace the lifecycle of their publications. In this way, they can ensure their research evaluation processes and any expressions of concern or retractions associated with their articles are clear, demonstrating a commitment to ethical publishing to readers. 2?? Making contributors and their affiliations known Including information about authors' institutions and funding sources in article-level metadata also promotes accountability by enabling readers to independently evaluate the context behind research findings and potential conflicts of interest. Tip: To ensure all contributors to scholarly works are recognized and identifiable, journals can implement the CRediT Taxonomy from the National Information Standards Organization. 3?? Promoting interoperability Finally, standardized metadata encourages interoperability across databases and publishing platforms. All of this makes it easier for research to be cross-referenced and verified by humans and machines, strengthening the academic record as a whole. ?? Wrap up Prioritizing structured and detailed metadata is more than an administrative task—it's a commitment to advancing trust in the scholarly record. By working together to enrich metadata at scale, journal publishers and editors can promote research transparency, accountability, and accessibility. To learn more, we encourage you to read Dr. Amdekar's article linked in the comments??
