A reminder for all of our friends celebrating Thanksgiving in the U.S. to be on the lookout for wandering turkeys... ??
Your chances of being hunted by a turkey are low, but never zero. Be careful out there. This Peeping “Tom” was spotted at Jewel Cave National Monument.? It was looking for a cave tour, but it was too late in the day to accommodate. The ranger on duty thoughtfully explained the park was closing. After some ruffled feathers and some ‘fowl’ language, “Pluck my what?”, the turkey left the park without further incident. ? ? ?? Greater editorial productivity awaits! This #JournalTipsTuesday, we're covering questions every e-board should ask to determine if their peer review process is as efficient as it could be. Let's get to it! ? Are authors and reviewers experiencing delays? This first question is a big one! And the most direct way to find out is to ASK. Consider sending an optional brief 2-question survey to authors and reviewers after their submission or manuscript assignment is complete, inviting them to rate the ease of the process on a scale of 1-5 with the option to include an open-ended response to provide more detail. You can also meet with your editorial team to bullet out common causes for author and/or reviewer confusion that you've heard. From there, work to identify problem areas and get to their root to prevent them from happening. For example, are authors struggling to find your submission system? It may be time to add a more prominent "submit now" button to your website. Are authors forgetting to attach files to manuscripts? Consider making file uploads required fields for completing a submission. ?? Do you have too many peer review steps? The best way to spot unnecessary steps in peer review is to outline your process and consider whether anything seems excessive or redundant. For example: - Are there technical checks before the 1st round of review that you could push back (e.g., to avoid editors spending so much time on submissions that may get rejected)? - Are there manuscript formatting steps you could cut? (For example, could you automate citation normalization so editors and authors don't have to worry about it?) - Are editors spending a lot of time on recurring tasks like sending manuscript assignments or organizing files — and, if so, could any of those steps be automated with software? ?? Can you get a birds-eye view of where editorial tasks stand? Finally, another area where many journals struggle with efficiency is allocating work among editors and keeping tabs on editorial performance. The first step to address such concerns is ensuring you have clearly defined team member roles so everyone knows what's expected of them. From there, we recommend adopting shared task management tools (for example, journals using Scholastica's Peer Review System can assign and track tasks using ToDos) and tracking journal performance analytics. Key performance indicators to focus on include: ? The number of manuscripts assigned to each editor ? Editor assignment speed ? Time to decision by editor From there, regularly review your KPIs to ensure you're allocating work fairly and that everyone is completing their tasks on time. ?? Wrap up We hope these questions serve as a helpful starting point for evaluating your peer review process and finding ways to save time. Have additional suggestions? Let us know in the comments! ?? #ScholarlyPublishing #PeerReview

Alicea Hibbard, MHA, chronicles an impactful example of how Indigenous knowledge can help advance scholarship and why it's critical to work with local communities (well worth a read!) ?
During a deadly outbreak in the Four Corners region of the U.S., traditional Navajo knowledge offered crucial insights that modern science alone could not uncover. Our latest article explores the collaboration between public health experts and Navajo communities to identify the mystery virus, offering a powerful reminder of the value in honoring diverse perspectives and integrating traditional wisdom with scientific inquiry. https://lnkd.in/gjZ3RxtM #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #SinNombreVirus #NAHM2025
