What do you do when a cold email reply sounds like a soft 'No'? A few weeks ago, I shared how I followed up with a potential advisor after a delayed response. Here’s what she said: "Hi Amaka, I encourage you to apply for graduate school (Dept. of Horticultural Sciences at Texas A&M). After applying, we can figure out if we can offer you an assistantship and/or submit a request for support of international students. You could also explore options. Maybe your country or international institutions could help subsidize your studies." No clear "yes." No promise of funding. It’s easy to feel discouraged, especially when funding in my country, Nigeria, is almost non-existent. But here’s how I learned to navigate situations like this: The VHB Formula: ?? V – Versatile: Explore every funding option you can find. ?? H – Honest: Share the funding challenges in your country politely. ?? B – Bold: Ask your potential advisor for other opportunities. A vague response isn’t a rejection, it’s a door. ??Push it open.
