Ask The Expert - Question: Is an emergency stop cable pull switch required to have an integrated #EmergencyStop palm button on it? Answer, from Devin Murray, BSEE, MBA, FS Eng (TüV Rheinland): No. An integrated e-stop palm button is not a requirement for an #EmergencyCable #PullSwitch. It is often offered as an optional feature. If you have a long span, the tension close to the eyelet of the switch will be high and it may be difficult to pull on the trip wire. In such instances, having the integrated e-stop will provide a safe and easier means of actuating the switch in an #emergency.

Safety Light Curtains are a non-contact, self-testing safety guard (AOPD), which are used for the protection of #hazardous points, hazardous areas, and #machine access points. If one or more beams of the curtain are interrupted by an object or a person, a stop signal is emitted to halt a hazardous movement and bring the machine to standstill. Typical applications for safety light curtains are on robot cells, automatic-processing plants, transfer lines, rack storage, and pallet loaders. Question: Are there specific safety standards to be followed in specific industries? Answer, from Devin Murray, BSEE, MBA, FS Eng (TüV Rheinland): ?? ?? Some industries have specific requirements to follow. For example, the #FoodIndustry requires hygiene compliant devices, #WoodworkingMachinery requirements can be found under OSHA 1910.213 and #elevator & #escalator industry requirements can be found under ASME A17. However, #machine types can overlap industries, such as #robots and #RoboticCells, whose requirements fall under ANSI/RIA15.06 or a mechanical power press whose requirements fall under OSHA 1910.217. Ultimately, if an industry specific standard is not provided, a general machine type standard typically is, starting with basic #MachineSafety concepts as in ISO 12100.

Question: Are individually coded interlocks required for PLe and SIL3 applications? Answer, from Devin Murray, BSEE, MBA, FS Eng (TüV Rheinland): Performance Levels per ISO13849 and Safety Integrity Levels per IEC62061 refer to the #safety related parts of the control system (SRP/CS). ISO 14119, which deals with the design and selection of guards, refers to individually coded interlocks as one option to help combat device manipulation. Although a clean and easy method to avoid device tampering on a high level, unique coding does not play a role in the actual calculation of the PL or SIL, nor is it a required characteristic for a Control Category or System Type architecture per ISO13489 and IEC 62061 respectively.
