In the wake of the hurricane Helene, our hearts go out to the people of Asheville who have been affected. As the city begins the challenging process of rebuilding, we are committed to participating in and supporting the recovery efforts. Over the course of our work in Asheville, we have gotten to know this vibrant and resilient community. Now they need help to rebuild homes and restore livelihoods. The double-height entryway welcomes you with large west-facing windows that bathe the space in natural light, creating an airy, vibrant atmosphere that connects the harbor’s activity with the interior. ?? The space celebrates tradition with its timber-framed ceiling, reminiscent of New England fish shacks, and antique wooden lobster traps that add a touch of nostalgia. The glazed teal and white ceramic tiles not only enhance the maritime theme but also ensure ease and efficiency for cleanup. ?? Inefficiencies in layout: A deep dive into the market's operations led to a restructured layout that separated the prepared foods section from the traditional fish market, with additional customer service points to streamline operations. ?? Ventilation and hygiene issues: The new design incorporated improved ventilation systems and easy-to-clean materials like glazed ceramic tiles, addressing the previous problems of odors and wet floors. ?? Space utilization: The space was reimagined with a focus on maximizing functionality, including the introduction of a double-height entryway and an optimized kitchen area. Larsen’s Fish Market, a long-standing and cherished community institution, tasked us with replacing their original building with a contemporary, revitalized space that would continue to serve as a hub for commerce and community exchange. The goal was to create a design that would address the operational inefficiencies of the old market while maintaining the market's historical and community-centered identity. The agreed-upon goals of the project were to: ?? Create a functional and efficient space that would support and enhance the market's commercial activities. ?? Enhance the customer experience by improving the layout, ventilation, and overall aesthetic appeal of the market. ?? Integrate sustainable technologies into the design, particularly in relation to the market’s operations, such as the lobster tanks. ?? Ensure the market continues to serve as a community hub while attracting both local residents and tourists.
