Pediatric #PhysicalTherapy can be a helpful solution for many families, but it can be challenging for parents and caregivers to know when to utilize those services. Having information is key to helping those parents know how to speak to medical professionals to get the referrals they need. One area of concern that we frequently see in our gym is related to a developmental delay. Signs that your child may have a developmental delay include not meeting milestones for rolling over, crawling, and walking. An example may be a child that is 18 months and not yet walking. If you are noticing possible signs of a #DevelopmentalDelay, talk with your primary care doctor. Talk with them about the types of ICD-10 codes that they will use on the referral to ensure that your doctor and your insurance company are on the same page. We often see the following codes: * R62.0: delayed milestone in childhood * F82: specific developmental disorder of motor function While most physicians may have certain practices that they typically refer to, you are entitled to request that a referral be sent to a practice of your choice. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself! #PediatricPhysicalTherapy #ChildDevelopment #ICD10 #MilestoneDelay #MotorFunctionDisorder #ParentingTips #AdvocateForYourself #EarlyIntervention #ChildHealth

#Cupping has gathered tons of attention in the last year, especially with athletes and practitioners of more holistic interventions. Our Pediatric #PhysicalTherapy team also utilizes cupping as one of their strategies, but it looks different than the images you see on social media. While pediatric cupping is a modified form of the traditional cupping therapy, we are able to achieve successful outcomes without as dramatic of an approach. The process is specifically tailored for the gentle skin and tissues of your child. It involves placing cups on the skin to create suction, which can help improve blood flow, reduce muscle tension, and promote healing. This type of intervention can be particularly helpful when addressing #pain, the need for #relaxation in the muscles, and has even been shown to produce positive outcomes with #asthma by loosening congestion. The benefits of such a treatment are that it is a non-invasive procedure that can be produce results in a short period of time. This makes it easier for your child to tolerate. Furthermore, the gentle nature of this intervention makes it suitable for infants, toddlers, and children of all ages. Don't be afraid to ask question or to share if you are nervous about cupping. A skilled #PT will be glad to walk you through the process. #SchieSpeech #VirginiaBeach #PhysicalTherapist #EarlyInterventions

We recently listened to the Raising Healthy Kid Brains #podcast and came across this episode regarding how to identify speech milestones in children ages two thru five. Amy Nielson utilized information from The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) as her reference and then shared that information in a format that is easy to understand. One thing she shares really stood out to us: "And you’re building a culture of question asking which is so valuable..." Questions are a great way to encourage communication - whether verbal or non-verbal - and highlights the social importance of interaction and engagement. Anytime we are showing interest in what our child is doing, it also builds their confidence. All amazing things! Give the podcast a listen and check her out on Spotify and other podcast platforms. https://lnkd.in/eTbHF7bE #RaisingHealthyKidBrains #SpeechMilestones #ChildDevelopment #ParentingTips #EarlyChildhood #CommunicationSkills #ASHA #ParentingPodcast #HealthyKids

Healthcare can speak in codes (literally!), which can make important information feel unaccessible to the person that needs it the most: the patient. One of the ways that providers and insurance agencies communicate with one another are through ICD-10 codes. The International Classification of Diseases (#ICD) was originally created by the World Health Organization to help them record, analyze, interpret and compare mortality and morbidity data collected in different countries or regions and at different times. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services adopted this system for specific use in the US and now it has been further adapted as the primary way that physicians and insurance agencies communicate the need for services. That is why ICD-10 codes matter. Your insurance agency may not cover certain codes, making it more difficult for you to receive covered interventions. Find a practitioner that is willing to explain codes to you and walk you thru why they are choosing the ones they do. If your insurance doesn't cover those codes, ask your practitioner if there are any additional codes that may be applicable. Understand the system, understand the players, and don't be afraid to ask questions! #Healthcare #ICD10 #HealthInsurance #PatientCare #MedicalCoding #HealthcareCommunication #HealthcareSystem #HealthcareEducation #HealthcareAwareness #PatientAdvocacy

#MyofunctionalTherapy is a concept that is still confusing and foreign to many clients. What people do understand, however, is jaw pain, headaches, and the many other symptoms of TMJ that can impact daily life. People also crave solutions that are long-term, that address that actual root of the cause rather than the effects. A recent article shared on The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) highlighted exactly how SLP can provide those exact interventions. "Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) showed promise 'in reducing the risk of TMD aggravation, lowering pain sensitivity to muscles' palpation, and improving the range of mandibular movements, thus positively impacting oral functions.' OMT provided by an SLP incorporated techniques such as thermotherapy, relaxation, massotherapy, myotherapy, and functional training of oral functions." By offering targeted therapies, such as #myotherapy, SLPs can better help their clients by providing pain and symptom relief that is meaningful. And that is exactly the type of business that we are in. Martins Rodrigues S., Moreira Casanova Vieira H. I. . y Tello Rato Milheiras Rodrigues I. . (2024). "Pediatric physical therapists support children with disabilities and their families to maximize the potential of every child. I propose that to do this, we must focus our interventions to promote a child’s active participation in community life and build programs and relationships that promote belonging." Long, Toby PT, PhD, FAPTA. Inclusion, Participation, Belonging = Surviving, Thriving, Flourishing. Pediatric Physical Therapy 36(3):p 298-306, July 2024. | DOI: 10.1097/PEP.0000000000001111 A recent article in Pediatric Physical Therapy highlighted the incredible emotional benefits that can occur when pediatric physical therapy is utilized to promote independence and inclusion. The World Health Organization estimates that 16% of the world's population has a disability, resulting in approximately 1.3 billion friends, neighbors, and family members that are living with a #disability. We appreciate that this article specifically highlights how creating interventions that promote clients and their families access to community involvement, ensures that we are not only encouraging independence in the home. While it can be vital to first focus on the immediate needs of one's home, we shouldn't limit our focus. You live beyond the four walls of your house. So should our interventions. The National Institutes of Health published an article by Cureus Journal of Medical Science highlighting the importance of #PediatricPhysicalTherapy and its significance in child development and rehabilitation. According to authors Chavan Srushti Sudhir and H.V. Sharath: "Beyond correcting errors, it encourages children's physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development, enabling them to realize their full potential. Additionally, the use of cutting-edge methods and technology has improved pediatric physical therapy's effectiveness and engagement levels, improving the experience for patients as a whole." We are proud to be able to offer our clients access to #PhysicalTherapy, especially our younger clients as the medical community recognizes how pivotal physical therapy can be in early interventions. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) recently issued a report on potential changes to Medicare and Medicaid services in 2025, as currently recommended by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. One of the proposed changes would directly impact #Medicaid and the ability for increased continuity of care. According to the report: "Specifically, the proposal would require 12 months of continuous eligibility. For example, if a child qualified for Medicaid on July 1, 2024, and then in December 2024 no longer met the state Medicaid eligibility requirements, the child would remain on Medicaid until June 30, 2025. #ASHA is pleased with this proposed change, which is a positive and significant step towards maintaining access to and continuity of care for children covered under Medicaid." Being able to maintain consistent and familiar care - especially for children - is always a high priority for any practitioner. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out! #ContinuityOfCare #HealthcarePolicy #SpeechTherapy #Audiology #MedicaidCoverage #HealthcareAdvocacy #ChildHealth #PhysicalTherapy #EarlyInterventions

Even though they are far away (over 10,000 miles!), we enjoyed reading the National Aged Care Design Principles and Guidelines that Speech Pathology Australia shared recently. One of the adjustments that they recommend is in reducing background noice to promote increased focus and communication. This is a technique that can be just as instrumental for younger adults and children, especially those that struggle with sensory barriers. Take time to sit in a space and really hear all the sounds - dog barking in the backyard, radio playing in the background, toys beeping, and a cellphone ringing. Adjusting those distractions can have a significant impact on a person's ability to enjoy and engage with their environment.
Did you know a noisy environment can affect an older person’s ability to communicate and can increase confusion? The National Aged Care Design Principles and Guidelines are an evidence-based resource that encourages aged care providers to make practical design changes to improve people’s quality of life, including addressing noisy environments. Changes range from simple, low-cost improvements to existing homes, to more substantial features for new buildings. ??
