Dear reader, Please help me amplify this message. I’m the President of Sage Bionetworks, a nonprofit research organization dedicated to collecting, curating, and stewarding biomedical data to advance treatments for Alzheimer’s, cancer, rare diseases, and more. Today, we woke up to the news that federal disbursements supporting our ongoing research would be frozen by 5 PM ET. Attempts to log into the system resulted in error messages for hours. Imagine your bank announcing that ATM withdrawals would be frozen within 24 hours—only for the machines to stop working as panic lines form. While a last-minute court intervention may have temporarily suspended the order, today’s events have shaken my confidence in relying primarily on U.S. federal funding to drive biomedical breakthroughs. I am more determined than ever to expand Sage’s funding portfolio beyond federal sources to ensure that critical research continues. I am deeply grateful for the support Sage has received over the years from NIH, NSF, ARPA-H, and other federal agencies. Since 2009, this funding has enabled us to: ? Secure custody & stewardship of 3.5+ PB of biomedical data ? Build Synapse.org, used by hundreds of thousands of researchers worldwide to share data and collaborate ? Benchmark AI algorithms toward FDA approvals via open community challenges ? Help bring immunotherapy drugs to clinical trials through open data portals ? Enable company formations and thousands of scientific breakthroughs based on the data we steward and the tools we have built But today made one thing clear: Sage must look beyond federal funding to sustain its mission. If you care about solving the worst diseases of our time with data-driven approaches, if you want to see biomedical research move at the pace of AI, please drop me a line. Whether you’re in tech, life sciences, or anywhere in between, the fight against cancer, Alzheimer’s, and rare diseases depends on high-quality biomedical data—and we know where to find it and how to make the most of it. Patients are waiting—impatiently. Luca Foschini, PhD ?? [email protected] UPDATE: WOW, thank you all for your heartwarming support!! People have been asking how they can help. 4 ways: ?? Donate: https://lnkd.in/gvz4MF_2 ?? Got biomedical data to share? https://lnkd.in/gFnewfwc ?? Want to use synapse.org's 3.5PB of data to further the understanding of cancer, Alzheimer's, and rare diseases? Talk to us: [email protected] ?? Got health AI models to benchmark? With the upcoming presidential inauguration, there’s no better time to explore the legislative process and how laws are made. That’s why we’re excited to share a Q&A with Professor John Wilkerson, the visionary behind?Legislative Explorer (https://legex.org). Legislative Explorer (LegEx) is an innovative data visualization tool that allows users to explore how bills move through the U.S. Congress and Washington State’s legislature, making the legislative process more accessible and engaging. In this Q&A, we discuss the inspiration behind LegEx, the challenges of creating it, and its impact on civic education. As we celebrate LegEx’s selection for the 2025 Communication Arts Interactive Award, we invite you to discover how data and design can demystify democracy. #LegislativeExplorer #DataVisualization #DemocracyInAction #SchemaDesign

As we close out 2024, I'm energized by the opportunities ahead in AI. We're at a fascinating inflection point — AI offers extraordinary power to extract meaning from complex data, yet we're just beginning when it comes to imagining the interfaces needed to harness its full potential. The next generation of digital tools will fundamentally change how we interact with information. Through our work in applied AI, we're seeing how language models, agents, and spatial intelligence are opening new possibilities for human-AI collaboration that were unthinkable just a couple of years ago. Thank you to our partners, collaborators, and the Schema Design team for an incredible year of exploration and innovation. Looking forward to 2025 and envisioning intelligent interfaces that will shape how we work with frontier technologies. #AppliedAI #IntelligentInterfaces #Innovation #AI #UX

We're excited to unveil the new Country Scorecard on the Atlantic Council's Freedom and Prosperity Indexes platform. This feature provides a clear, one-page snapshot of each country's performance across key metrics like political freedom, economic freedom, rule of law, and prosperity. It also highlights the correlation between these factors, helping uncover insights about what drives progress. Dive into the data and explore the correlations:?https://lnkd.in/eDXvhKg5 Visit the platform:?https://lnkd.in/eN2QSzjd We are immensely proud of this collaboration with the Atlantic Council Freedom and Prosperity Center. #FreedomAndProsperityIndexes

Our founder Christian Marc Schmidt just shared reflections from TEDAI San Francisco. From in-silico experimentation to AI agents transforming workflows, AI is shaping the future of innovation. At?Schema, we’re excited to build on these developments with our vision for?Knowledge Interfaces—new tools designed to support the creation and dissemination of knowledge in the age of multimodal AI. #TEDAI #GenerativeAI #KnowledgeInterfaces #FutureOfAI

Just wrapped up an incredible two days at TEDAI San Francisco filled with discussion and insights into how AI is transforming a wide variety of areas, from science to the creative fields. A few highlights: - Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli gave a fascinating presentation on time’s fluidity and relativity and its implications for AI and physics. - Surya Ganguli of Andreessen Horowitz spoke about how AI mirrors the brain's predictive capabilities through synaptic networks, offering glimpses of future breakthroughs in explainable AI. - Max Jaderberg of Isomorphic Labs shared exciting developments with AlphaFold and in-silico open-ended discovery—a paradigm where AI models complex natural processes, experimenting in-silico to bring discoveries back to the real world. Day two shifted to practical applications, from AI agents to generative video. Omar Shaya of MultiOn discussed how AI agents are taking on increasingly complex tasks, while Joshua X. of HeyGen emphasized the growing importance of real-time video generation for personalized content. These discussions tied into a panel on Science and Creativity where I reflected on a concept I’ve been giving much thought to lately: Knowledge Interfaces. These are the next generation of tools that will enable the creation and dissemination of knowledge, combining the two pillars of Search and Learning which are key to AI’s ability to synthesize massive datasets. Steven Johnson's remarks on NotebookLM highlighted this potential, showing how AI can help us manage and process complex knowledge. Reflecting on the event, I’m excited about the future of multimodal AI and the opportunity for next-generation interfaces that can integrate both AI agents and Generative AI to reshape how we learn and interact. Thanks to Sam De Brouwer and Walter DE BROUWER for putting together this fantastic event – looking forward to next year. #TEDAI #ai #knowledgeinterfaces

Our founder Christian Marc Schmidt and Creative Technology Director Kenton Powell just returned from MOME Budapest where they led a successful week-long workshop called the Experiential Data Lab. Students from a variety of concentrations (interaction design, media design, graphic design, photography, and object design) produced a wide variety of work, from a documentary video to participatory experiences to an interactive installation. Thanks for everyone involved, in particular Peter Molnar, Mary Karyda, Ph.D., and Mihály Minkó for the collaboration! #datavisualization #experiencedata #design

It was an absolute pleasure teaching the Experiential Data Lab at MOME Budapest last week. The students were incredibly talented, and the workshop results didn't fail to impress. Among the projects: A media installation consisting of a Kinect and a projector, visualizing Spotify data via sensing the position of the user in space. Thanks to Mary Karyda, Ph.D. and Mihály Minkó for their support and participation, to the students for their enthusiasm and creativity, and to Peter Molnar for the opportunity. Looking forward to the next one! #datavisualization #experiencedata #design
